HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team suffered a setback in the final game of a three-game series with No. 8 University of Washington, falling 11-3 at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Rainbow Wahine (0-3) last suffered a three-game sweep in 2019 against conference foe Cal State Fullerton in mid-April. The Huskies (16-2) extended their win streak to six and have now won 10 of their last 11.
Â
UW jumped out to an early lead scoring six runs in the first three innings against freshman pitcher
Jetta Nannen as she made her second start of the series. UH kept the game within slam range in the first three frames, scoring two in the bottom of the second. Freshman infielder
Mya'liah Bethea scored on a wild pitch. A few moments later, sophomore
Cira Bartolotti crossed home plate on a double steal attempt, bringing the game to a 6-2 stalemate later on in the fourth.
Â
The 'Bows threatened in the fourth, loading the bases against UW with two outs. Gabbie Plain, the ace of the Huskies rotation, entered the game in relief, stalling the threat by UH, keeping it at 6-2 affair.
Â
A four-run fifth inning put the game out of reach for UH, but junior shortstop
Nawai Kaupe was able to invoke a little bit of revenge against her former team, homering off Plain in the bottom of the fifth for her first long ball of the season.
Â
UH will regroup and start preparing for the Big West Conference play with nearly two weeks off between the UW and UC Santa Barbara. The 'Bows will face off with the Gauchos for a four-game series, beginning on Mar. 19th.
