HONOLULU, O'ahu – In its first action in more than a year, the University of Hawai'i men's tennis enjoyed a strong 2021 debut with a 7-0 win over UC Riverside in a Big West Conference home match Monday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors (1-0) made quick work of the Highlanders, dropping just one set total in singles and doubles action.
 
It all started with a  sweep in doubles. Hawai'i's No. 1 duo of Andre Ilagan and Lucas Labrunie finished first by outplaying UCR's No. 1 duo Gilbert Chung and Nolan McCaig, 6-3. The No. 2 duo of Blaz Seric and Axel Labrunie soon followed, winning against UCR's Antreas Djakouris and Joshua Roth, 6-2, clinching the double's point for the 'Bows. The doubles play ended on the No. 3 court, with UH's Simao Telo Alves and Tristan Martins edging out UCR's Jayson Blando and Michael Blando, 6-4, sealing the doubles point for the Warriors.
 
UH continued its momentum in singles. The No. 111-ranked Ilagan finished first at the top flight by swiftly securing the point against Chung, 6-0, 6-2. In equal fashion, Lucas Labrunie excelled on the No. 2 court in his game against Djakouris, 6-2, 6-1.  Hawai'i then got the clinching point on the No. 3 court as Seric held off McCaig through the second set, capturing the win and clinching the match on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 7-6(4).
 
With the match guaranteed for the Warriors, Axel Labrunie continued UH's march to a sweep by winning his match on the No. 4 court against Roth, 7-6(3), 6-0, while Simão Telo Alves triumphed over Jayson Blando on the No. 5 court, 6-4, 6-4. The match came to an official end with Martins taking Michael Blando in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
 
The Rainbow Warriors will play UC Riverside again in a non-conference match at the UH Tennis Complex on Tuesday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m.
