Rainbow Wahine fall in rain soaked finale with UC Santa Barbara

Honolulu - The University of Hawai'i softball team dropped the first of two games on Saturday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium against UC Santa Barbara, losing 7-0 and having the second game canceled due to field conditions after four rain delays on the day.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-4, 2-1) fell in the weekend's final conference game and marked the second time UH has been held scoreless this season. The Gauchos (4-15, 1-2) snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory.

Pitcher Emily Schuttish threw a complete game shutout as UH threatened in the third inning with a leadoff double from freshman infielder Mya'Liah Bethea, followed by junior center fielder Brittnee Rossi being hit by a pitch and a junior utility player Mikaela Gandia-Mak drawing a walk. While the threat put Schuttish and the Gauchos on notice, UH was not able to capitalize.

Freshman pitcher Jetta Nannen started the day with two scoreless innings before finding some resistance in the third, allowing two runs. The Gauchos wore down UH pitchers and put up a five-run fifth inning against seniors Emily Klee and Dominique Martinez.

The 'Bows' offense struggled to get things going with three rain delays in the first game, extending the game to four and a half hours to complete. Freshman right fielder Maya Nakamura joined Rossi and Bethea in collecting one hit apiece.

UH will head to California next week for their first road trip of the season for a three-game series with CSUN.
