HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team enjoyed another hot offensive night in an 81-64 victory over Cal Poly Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 7-5 overall and evened their Big West record at 5-5 with its third straight win and fourth in its last five games.
UH shot 55 percent on the evening – including a red-hot 62 percent in the first half – to complete the weekend sweep of the Mustangs (3-13, 1-9 in the Big West). It was a balanced attack for the Rainbow Warriors as nine of UH's 11 active players were in the scoring column by halftime.
James Jean-Marie led the way with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor in just 17 minutes of work.
Justin Webster also continued his hot hand by going 7-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 on three-pointers to finish with 18 points. Webster went a phenomenal 13-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-9 on three-pointers in the two-games versus the Mustangs.
Casdon Jardine posted 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while
Noel Coleman added a season-best 10 points.
JoVon McClanahan helped orchestrate the UH offense with seven assists, all of them coming the first half.
While UH led for the majority of the game, the Mustangs battled hard. UH trailed 28-26 with five minutes left in first half. But the 'Bows went on a 13-1 run to go up by double digits and eventually took a 44-35 lead at the break.
The 'Bows scored nine unanswered points to take a commanding 17-point lead five minutes into the second half. Cal Poly cut the deficit to eight points at one point but could get no closer as UH answered every Mustang rally.
UH has a big week ahead with a pair of home games versus conference co-leader UC Santa Barbara. The teams will square off first on Friday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
