Childs Named as One of the CSCAA 100 Greatest Women's Swimmers and Divers

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i swim and dive program has recently seen its fair share of success. The program has won multiple MPSF Championships, and numerous swimmers and divers were recognized as All-Americans and honorable mentions while competing at the highest level of the NCAA Championships. Today though, one swimmer reigns as one of the most decorated in program history as Jeanne Childs was named one of the top 100 swimmers and divers of all-time by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association on Tuesday.

Childs, a native of Denver, Colorado, swam for UH from 1981-1983. During her two seasons with the Rainbow Wahine, she set national records for the breaststroke. In 1983, she was named NCAA All-America, having placed first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. She later broke the American record in the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. trials for the World Swimming Championships.

Before coming to the island of O'ahu, Childs was a two-time All-American at the University of Texas but decided she wanted something different, choosing to come and swim for legendary swimming coach Al Minn.

In 2002 Childs was inducted into the UH Circle of Honor for her tremendous achievements while representing the university as a collegiate athlete and thereafter as a professional.

Childs is in rare company with the other 99 chosen swimmers and divers in the 100th year celebration of the CSCAA. Nearly three thousand athletes were nominated, with a blue-ribbon panel of current and former college swimmers, coaches, and media members making selections from a list of 973 finalists. Eighty-seven swimmers and thirteen divers were selected. They hail from twenty-eight states and thirteen countries. Highlights of the selections include 12 members of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and 59 Olympians.

The CSCAA's 100th birthday celebration will continue with upcoming announcements recognizing Centennial MVPs for each team along with a listing of the 100 Greatest Coaches, 100 Alumni of Impact. The anniversary will culminate with the Association's convention and awards banquet, May 2-4, 2022, in Rosemont, Illinois.
