Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Downs Long Beach State, 3-1

LONG BEACH, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (16-6, 13-1 Big West) defeated Long Beach (10-15, 4-10 BWC) in four sets, 25-21 25-11, 21-25, 25-19 on Saturday night. Four Rainbow Wahine put down double-digit kills—led by Riley Wagoner's 15. Both Brooke Van Sickle and Kate Lang notched double-doubles to help lift UH to its fifth-straight win.

All five starting hitters had at least seven kills each as UH hit .287 for the match. Four Rainbow Wahine—Wagoner, Van Sickle, Amber Igiede and Sky Williams all finished with at least 11 kills each.

At the net, UH's middle blockers, Igiede and Williams were a force to be reckoned with both offensively and defensively. Both had 11 kills apiece with Igiede hitting a career-high .786 hitting percentage (11-0-14) while Williams hit a lofty .526 (11-1-19). The Manoa Roofing Company out-"roofed" the Beach, 13.0-to-6.0 with Igiede, Williams, and Tiffany Westerber all tallying a match-high six blocks each. It marked the sixth time this season that UH amassed more than 10 team blocks against their opponents.

Wagoner registered her third-straight double-digit kill match as she buried a match-high 15 kills. She also had seven digs and was in on a pair of blocks.

Double-double machines Van Sickle and setter Kate Lang posted their 10th  and ninth double-doubles respectively for the season. Van Sickle came through with 12 kills and a team-high 17 digs, while Lang dished out 41 assists to go with 10 digs.

Tayli Ikenaga recorded her 15 double-digit dig match finishing with 16 digs and five assists.  She also added UH's only service ace and was a perfect 1.000 in serve receive.

In her first start of the season, and just her second career start, opposite Westerberg put down a season-high seven kills and was in on a career-high six blocks.

UH and LBSU traded leads to start the match. The Beach, off a four-point run, tied and then took a two point lead at 10-8. Hawai'i came right back, going on a 6-to-1 run of their own going into the media timeout with a 15-12 lead. A five-point run with Janelle Gong serving put the 'Bows up, 22-16. The Beach would answer scoring four-straight  to close to within two at 22-20. With UH up 23-21, the Rainbow Wahine would close out the set on a kill by Van Sickle and a solo block by Williams to take Set 1, 25-21.

Hawai'i jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in Set 2. The Rainbow Wahine went on a 4-to-1 run to go up by six at 13-7, forcing the Beach to call their first timeout. Later with Ikenaga serving, UH scored six-straight to go up by 10 at 19-9. Hawai'i won the final four consecutive points to take Set 2, 25-11 and a 2-0 set lead. Wagoner and Westerberg powered the UH offense down the stretch. The Rainbow Wahine hit .545 in the second set while holding the Beach to a .069 hitting percentage in Set 2.

Set 3 started with the lead see-sawing back and forth. The Beach took the lead back at 8-7 and led by as many as three points early. The Rainbow Wahine would knot the score at 18-18 on back-to-back kills by Williams. Hawai'i briefly took back the lead at 20-19. But it was all Beach after that, as they won seven of the last nine points—including the last four-straight—to capture Set 3, 25-21. The set win by the Beach snapped Hawai'i's 13-straight set win streak.

The Beach took their momentum into the fourth jumping out to a quick 8-4 lead, forcing UH called an early timeout. The 'Bows righted the ship and came out of the timeout scoring four-straight to tie things up at 8-8. LBSU would not relinquish the lead until UH was finally able to go in front 15-14. Hawai'i would proceed to go on a 5-to-0 scoring run to take a 20-15 lead. UH sealed their ninth straight win over Long Beach State, 25-19 in Set 4.

With the win, Hawai'i improved to 13-1 in conference and now atop the Big West standings as Cal Poly won at UC Santa Barbara in four.

Long Beach State was led by Kashauna Williams' 14 kills, but she hit just .081 with 11 errors on 37 attacks. Tia Chavira had a team-high 29 assists and match-high three service aces while Nicole Hoff popped up a match-high 21 digs.

Up next, the Rainbow Wahine return home to host UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 12 and UC San Diego on Sunday, Nov. 14. Saturday's match will start at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday's will start at 5:00 p.m. These will be the first matches at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center played in front of a full capacity crowd.
