HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened its Rainbow Wahine Invite tournament on Thursday afternoon. Hawai'i won two of their three doubles matches and five of six singles matches to start the five-day tournament held at the UH Tennis Complex.
In doubles, UH's duo of
Satsuki Takamura and
Nidhi Surapaneni knocked off HPU's Marleen Tilgner and Mihoki Miyahara, 6-2, while Hawai'i's Léa Romain and
Gitte Heynemans nearly blanked the Sharks' Marta Ruszczynaska and Rikona Murakami, 6-1. In a match where UH and HPU combined forces in doubles, UH's
Jessalyn Lopez and
Anna Kern defeated UH's
Avery Williams who was paired with HPU's Olivia Kjaer, 6-1.
In singles, Heynemans, Lopz and Kern all won in straight sets. Heynemans was dominant against HPU's Ruszczynska, 6-1, 6-0. Lopez defeated Kjaer, 6-1, 6-2. Kern, a recent transfer from Claremont McKenna College, won her first match as a Rainbow Wahine, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Murakami.
Hawai'i's Takamura won her first set, but HPU's Busson evened the match at 1-1 before Takamura bounced back in the third set to prevail, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the closed match of the day, UH's Kim edged out HPU's Valentina Mokrova in a hard fought three set win. Kim held off Mokrova in a thrird set tiebreaker to hang on for the win, 6-2. 4-6. 7-6 (2).
Hawai'i will compete in the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Invite on Friday, Nov. 5. All matches will be hosted at the UH Tennis Complex.
