Men’s Basketball Surges Past Pacific, 73-61

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team closed out the Outrigger Rainbow Classic strong with a 73-61 win over Pacific at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors closed the season-opening tournament with a 2-1 mark.

Noel Coleman scored a career-high 21 points, while Bernardo da Silva added 16 points and nine rebounds to lead UH. The pair were named to the all-tournament team. Da Silva was perfect from the field, hitting all five of his field goal attempts and going 6-of-6 from the line.

UH got off to a sluggish start and managed just nine points in the first 10 minutes of the game. But  the 'Bows exploded on a 24-10 run on the back end of the half, including 13 unanswered points, to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.

The second half continued to be a tight game as UH clung to a 53-48 lead with eight minutes left. But UH got a key contribution from reserve guard Amoro Lado who scored eight straight points for UH, including back-to-back three-pointers that gave the 'Bows a double-digit lead. UH coasted the rest of the way with the Tigers never getting within single digits again.

UH shot 52 percent in the second half while putting the clamps on Pacific's perimeter game. The Tigers (1-2) shot jsut 37 percent from field and were stymied into just 2-of-17 shooting from three-point territory.

In the day's first game, UH Hilo upset Northern Colorado, 87-79, in overtime. Northern Colorado and UH each finished with a 2-1 tournament mark, but the Bears claimed the Classic title by virtue of its win over UH on Thursday.

The Rainbow Warriors will next head for the road and their second straight tournament with the Las Vegas Classic, Nov. 25-26, at the Orleans Arena. UH will take on Illinois-Chicago at 1:00 p.m. PT/11:00 a.m. HT on Thanksgiving before facing at either South Alabama or San Diego the next day.
