ON THE PITCH
- The Rainbow Wahine ended a seven-match losing streak on Sunday with a 0-0 tie against UC Santa Barbara. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Marquez notched her second shutout of the season while collecting two saves.
- Going into the season, head coach Michele Nagamine harped on defense being a key factor in the 'Bows approach. At times UH has showcased the strategy while battling injuries on the backline. UH is currently 10th in the conference in goals allowed against conference opponents at eight but has also logged 380 minutes of action.
- Traditionally, UH has a much better chance of picking up a win when scoring first, accumulating a record of 169-34-13 all-time. For one reason or another, 2021 has not spelled the same success as UH has scored first in two conference matches and lost. The first coming against CSUN on September 23rd and the next, last Thursday on the 30th against Cal Poly.
- The attack for UH has been limited at times, but in terms of sophomore forward Kelci Sumida, she's having a solid season. The Honolulu, O'ahu native has notched four goals on the season to lead the team, and all four have come against conference opponents, putting her at No. 4 in the Big West.
- Two of the more notable matches to lead the way for UH in getting into the conference tournament in 2019 were wins over UCR and a tie with CSF. Both Sumida and sophomore midfielder Eliza Ammendolia notched goals in the 2-0 win over the Highlanders, while junior forward Kayla Ryan scored the match tying goal with UCR in a 1-1 bout. Historically the 'Bows hold a winning record over UCR at 5-4-1, while success against the traditional powerhouse of the Titans is at 2-12-1 has been limited.
