Rainbow Warrior Stars Receive Weekly Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Hawai'i safety Khoury Bethley and quarterback Brayden Schager were recognized by the Mountain West for their performances in last Saturday's upset of nationally ranked Fresno State. Bethley, a senior from Chino, Calif., was named the defensive player of the week, while Schager, who made his first career start in place of an injured Chevan Cordeiro, earned freshman of the week honors.

In addition, all-purpose back Calvin Turner Jr., was named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll for the second time this season. The senior from Savannah, Ga., scored twice, including the game-tying touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

Bethley finished the game with two interceptions, a forced fumble, nine tackles, and sack to lead the Rainbow Warriors defense, which forced six Bulldogs turnovers. Bethley's first interception occurred as Fresno State was driving deep into UH territory just before the end of the first half. His second pick led to the Warriors' game-tying touchdown drive.

With the score tied at 24-24, the senior strip sacked Bulldog quarterback Jake Haener near midfield which set up UH's eventual game-winning field goal. Bethley's two interceptions marked his second career multi-interception game after also recording two picks in UH's 2019 Hawai'i Bowl win over BYU.

Schager, a true freshman from Dallas, Texas, finished 11-of-27 passing for 116 yards and threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns. He became the fifth straight UH quarterback to win in his starting debut and the second straight freshman (Chevan Cordeiro) to do so. Schager completed touchdown passes to Caleb Phillips and Turner and directed the Warriors to the go-ahead field goal in a 17-point fourth quarter.

This marks the first time UH (3-3, 1-1 MW) has won back-to-back Mountain West defensive awards after cornerback Cameron Lockridge received the honor following Hawai'i's win over New Mexico State two weeks ago. Nevada's Toa Taua and Brandon Talton earned offensive and special teams player of the week, respectively.

The Warriors are idle this week and will next play at Nevada, Saturday, Oct. 16 in Reno, Nev.
