HONOLULU—Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time in 691 days, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (13-6, 10-1 Big West) came out with renewed energy as they swept UC Davis (8-15, 4-8 Big West), 25-19, 25-7, 25-22. With the win, the Rainbow Wahine remained tied atop the Big West standings with UC Santa Barbara.
Brooke Van Sickle and
Martyna Leoniak led Hawai'i to its eight sweep of the season with 500 tickets issued on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Van Sickle put down double-digit kills for the 16th time this season with a match-high 12 kills. She finished one dig shy of a double-double. A week after Leoniak stymied CSUN for five aces, Van Sickle did the same, recording a season high five aces. Four of her five aces came in a 10-to-0 Hawai'i run in the middle of the second set.
After a breakout match at CSUN last Saturday, Leoniak came through with double-digit kills for the second-straight match. She pounded 10 kills down and was also in on a career-high and match-high seven blocks—tied with teammate
Skyler Williams. The seven blocks tied a season-high for Williams who finished the night with nine kills and a lofty .667 hittig percentage as she did not commit an error in 15 attacks.
Setter
Kate Lang had the 'Bows clicking on offense through most of the match. UH ended with a team .333 hitting percentage. It is just the sixth time the 'Bows hit over .300 for the season. Lang had her fifth double-double of the season dishing out 35 assists to go with a match-high 16 digs—one off of her career-high.
In the first set, UH inched out to an early lead, but UC Davis was able to knot the score at 11-11. The Aggies took a brief lead at 12-11 but from that point, the 'Bows went on a 6-to-1 run during which UH tied and retook the lead at 13-12. UH never looked back. Hawai'i won the frame going away, scoring six of the last eight points in the set—including the last three-straight to win, 25-19.
The Rainbow Wahine took that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead behind the serving of Lang. Later, the Aggies could not solve Van Sickle behind the service line. The 'Bows rolled to score 10-straight points—which included four service aces by Van Sickle during the run. UCD was forced to call both their timeouts before UH had scored 11 points. Hawai'i ran away with the set, scoring the last eight of nine points. It was UH's most lopsided set win since UH took the first set at Cal State Fullerton, 25-3 on Oct. 20, 2018. The 'Bows won Set 2, 25-7 to take a 2-0 set lead.
In set three, Hawai'i started off well. After the score was tied at 1-1, it was all Hawai'i as they built its lead to as many as seven points at 19-13. But the Aggies would not go down quietly. UCD closed to within one point at 21-20. But the 'Bows would hold off the Aggies for the win, 25-22.
The Aggies were led by Olivia Utterback's 11 kills and five blocks. Shira Lahav had a team-high 15 digs while Jane Seslar had 16 assists.
Up next, the Rainbow Wahine will take on UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
