MALIBU, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif. on Friday. Four Rainbow Warriors played in the Round of 64 and two advance to the Round of 32 on Saturday.

Competition began for the 'Bows with doubles, where all four men's teams came up short. Hawai'i's Cody Castro and Karl Collins were defeated by Cal Poly's Fernando Fonseca and Gary Vardanyan, 8-3, while UH's Andre Ilagan and Blaz Seric lost to UC Santa Barbara's Kai Brady and Phillip Jordan, 8-4. The UH duo of Killian Maitre and Guillaume Tattevin fell to Pepperdine's Enrique Luque Rico and Linus Carlsson Hadigian, 8-4. Axel Labrunie and Simao Telo Alves were close to overcoming UC Irvine's Ali Amiri and Rithvaik Krishna but lost by a break, 8-6.

The Rainbow Warriors moved on to singles and started with the Round of 128. Labrunie captured a win against UC San Diego's Phillip Lan in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the Round of 64. Both Tattevin and Collins won their matches by default (injuries) to move on to the second round as well. Seric proved tenacious, taking his opponent, Grand Canyon's Argote Mariano, to three sets before dropping a close third set in a tie-breaker, 2-6 6-4 7-6(7).

Ilagan, who is the ninth seed in the tournament, had a bye in the first round and began action in the Round of 64. He came out to record a swift win over UC San Diego's Jeff Cole, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 32,  joining Labrunie. Labrunie won a nail-biting match, 7-5, 7-5, over Arizona's Carlos Hassey. 

Competition continues tomorrow with Ilagan and Labrunie playing in the Round of 32 while other Rainbow Warriors will play in consolation matches.
