Sumida Scores Late as Hawai‘i Takes Down UC Davis, 2-1

DAVIS, CALIF.—The University of Hawai'i soccer team played the role of spoiler on Thursday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field with a 2-1 victory over UC Davis for the program's first win in the 2021 season.

The Rainbow Wahine (1-9-3, 1-5-2) last won a match on October 31st, 2019, and it was also on the road against UC Davis. The Aggies (9-8, 4-5) are still fighting for the fourth and final spot in the Big West Conference tournament, but the loss against UH hurts their chances. UCD has one remaining match on the regular-season schedule, and it will be against UC San Diego on October 28th.

UH struck early as sophomore midfielder Eliza Ammendolia collected a pass from the right side of the box by junior forward McKenzie Moore. Ammendolia squirted the ball past the diving keeper for a 1-0 lead, finding the bottom right corner of the net in the fourth minute.

Ammendolia is tied for the team lead in assist with two, but the goal was her first of the season, second of her career at UH. Moore's assist was her first of the season.

The Aggies answered later in the 27th-minute evening, the score at 1-1, a stalemate that would hold for over 55 minutes of action.

Much like she has the entire season, sophomore forward Kelci Sumida came up big in the 85th minute. Sumida sprinted past the backline with the ball dropping in front of her in the box following a free-kick from junior defender Natalie Daub. Sumida found herself wide open with only the keeper to beat, drawing her in and beating her to her left for the game-winning goal.

The goal by Sumida was her team-leading fifth of the year, while Daub notched her second career assist.

UH played the entire match aggressively, outshooting the aggies 19-15, while corner kicks were knotted at 5-5, but UH drew more fouls than the home squad by a 9-3 margin.

The victory is also the first of sophomore Lauren Marquez's career as she picked up six saves in the match, with a total of 56 in her first season.

Next up is a match-up at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday. Going into action on Thursday, UH and CSUB were the only two teams in the Big West not to collect a conference win.
