TULSA, Okla.—Six members of the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the ITA All-American Championships with play in the prequalifying bracket. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Tulsa with matches being played at three sites: the University of Tulsa, LaFortune Park and Oklahoma State (Stillwater, Okla.)
Five of the Rainbow Warriors all advanced to the second round of the prequalifying. Simao Telo Alves cruised to a straight set win over UNLV's Anton Ornberg, 6-1, 6-2 while
Axel Labrunie battled back from a set down to defeat Pawit Sornlaksup of Toledo. Labruinie took the first set 6-4, but fell in the second 3-6. In the third set super tiebreaker, Labrunie held off Sornlaksup, 10-7 for the win. Newcomers
Guillaume Tattevin and Killian Maitre both notched wins in their first appearance as Rainbow Warriors. Tattevin knocked off Ignacio Vinas or Oral Roberts, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Maitre nearly blanked UNLV's Jack Hambrock, 6-1, 6-0.
All five UH players who advanced unfortunately fell in the second round. Maitre's match however could've gone either way. Liberty's Josh Wilson edged out Maitre in the first set by tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), but Maitre rallied to take the second set by tiebreaker in extended action, 7-6 (11-9). Wilson thought doubled up on Maitre in the third set super tiebreaker 10-5 to secure the win to advance.
Two Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to play on Sunday. Seric will take on Ole Miss' Walker Street and
Karl Collins will battle Kenner Taylor of Texas A&M.
