Igiede Leads Women's Volleyball Over Cal Poly

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (10-5, 7-0 Big West) swept Cal Poly, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Amber Igiede showed her athleticism leading the Rainbow Wahine with 13 kills and six blocks while Brooke Van Sickle notched double-digit kills for the sixth-straight match.

For the seventh time in the sophomore middle blocker's career and 12th time this season, Igiede recorded over 10 kills. She was all over the court, diving for balls in both the back and front row, posting seven digs with a service ace and an assist.

Senior outside hitter Van Sickle finished the match a dig shy of another double-double, finishing with 10 kills and nine digs. It marked her eighth time the season and the 12th of her career that she had at least 10 kills. She also added two assists and a block for the match.

The freshman performed well as setter Kate Lang dished out a match high 38 assists as the 'Bows out-hit Cal Poly .232-to-.130. Lang distributed her sets well, with all five starters putting up at least seven kills apiece. Tayli Ikenaga came up with a team-high 14 digs.

In the first set, Hawai'i took the lead early and never looked back. The 'Bows built their lead to as many as six points at 20-14. The Rainbow Wahine won the last three points to take Set 1, 25-20.

In the second set, Cal Poly (8-11, 6-2 Big West) responded by leading early, but the 'Bows took the lead on a 7-to-1 run—which included five-straight points with Riley Wagoner serving. The scoring run gave UH a 16-12 lead. Later a 6-to-1 run extended Hawai'i's lead to 22-15. The Mustangs tried to rally late, winning four of five points to trim their deficit to four points at 23-19, but a kill by Skyler Williams and a double-block by Wagoner and Igiede closed the set at 25-19 to take a 2-0 set lead.

The third set was much tighter with both teams see-sawing back and forth with 14 ties and five lead changes in the frame. Cal Poly regained the lead at 12-11 and held off the 'Bows until UH was able to leapfrog past the Mustangs at 23-22. Hawai'i scored the last four points consecutively to seal the win with a 25-22 Set 3 win.

In the match, head coach Robyn Ah Mow was 3-for-3 in challenges that were overturned at opportune times in the match—including match point when the original call was overtuned and a net violation was called on Cal Poly to end the game.

The Rainbow Wahine out hit Cal Poly, 47-to-35 in kills and had 11 mores assists as UH recorded 43 to CP's 32. Both teams were tied with 8.0 blocks each while the Mustangs had the edge in aces, 3-to-2.

Cal Poly's Tommi Stockham had a team-high 10 kills while Peyton Dueck logged a match-high 16 digs.

Next up, the Rainbow Wahine will battle CSU Bakersfield for the first time as Big West opponents on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m. The match will be played at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
