Rainbow Wahine Hang On Against Cal State Fullerton, 49-47

HONOLULU: The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team bounced back by taking down Cal State Fullerton 49-47 Friday night inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (2-3, 1-2) notched their first Big West Conference victory of the season, while the Titans (1-8, 0-5) have now lost five in a row to start the conference season.

UH played its most complete half in the first, holding CSF to 14 points, including a season-low six points in the second frame. Amping up the pressure on the perimeter, UH held the Titans to 0-of-6 from three-point land and forced nine turnovers.

Redshirt freshman Olivia Davies led the offensive push in the first 20 minutes with 10 points. Playing 15 of 20 minutes, Davis went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, including two three-point buckets, paving the way to the 29-14 advantage.

The third quarter's start favored the home squad as they jumped out with a 9-0 run, but it was countered with a 13-2 run by CSF to end the third frame. The momentum stayed with the Titans in the final frame, cutting what was previously a 23-point lead to just one at 48-47 with 17 seconds on the clock. After a missed free on the front end of two to tie the game, senior forward Amy Atwell did the same for the 'Bows to go up 49-47. The UH defensive strategy stayed intact, forcing an off-balance jumper by the Titans in the final seconds for the victory.

Davies made her debut last weekend against CSU Bakersfield, where she played a contributing role. Against the Titans, she stepped up as a go-to scorer finishing with 17 points in 34 minutes of play.

Senior guard Jadynn Alexander added 14 points of her own, along with five rebounds.

The Titans won the rebound battle, with a plus 13 upside, but the difference for the 'Bows compared to the past four games was the turnovers. UH accounted for a season-low 14 turnovers while forcing 16 miscues for CSF, resulting in 16 points off turnovers.

UH will have a chance to continue its winning ways with the second game of the series against CSF Saturday at 7 p.m. HT.
