FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team's skid continued with a 83-67 loss to Cal State Fullerton Friday at Titan Gym. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the Big West with their fourth straight loss.
Cal State Fullerton (4-4, 3-4 Big West) got off to a fast start and didn't let up while shooting 54 percent for the game. Four different Titans finished in double-digits, led by Tray Maddox Jr. who scored 23 points and drained five three-pointers. In all the Titans went a sizzling 9-of-18 from beyond the arc.
Justin Webster scored 20 points for UH — his second straight contest with 20 or more points.
Junior Madut added 12 points, while freshman
Biwali Bayles provided a spark at point guard finishing with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists in his second straight start.
UH had entered the game having beaten the Titans five straight times, including three straight wins at Titan Gym. However, their string of success came to an end with just the team's third loss to Cal State Fullerton in the last 19 meetings.
The Titans jumped out to a quick start and except for a few brief moments, led for the entirety of the first half. Fullerton took a 42-35 lead into the break after shooting 55 percent from the floor, while UH shot just 35 percent.
The second half was much like the first with the Titans continuing to shoot lights out while holding the Rainbow Warriors at bay. UH got within six early in the half, but that would be as close as it would get as Fullerton maintained a double-digit nearly throughout the rest of the contest.
UH won the boards (39-31) and turned the ball over just 10 times, but the Titans proved opportunistic with 20 points off those turnovers. They also out-scored UH 40-26 in the paint and got 36 points from their bench.
The teams will be back on the court Saturday with the second game of the two-game series. Tipoff is 5:00 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m. HT at Titan Gym.
