Men’s Basketball Thumps Fullerton To Get Back In Win Column

FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got back on the winning track with an emphatic 76-53 road win at Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at Titan Gym. The Rainbow Warriors halted a four-game losing skid and improved to 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.

One day after a lackluster defensive effort in a 16-point loss to the Titans (4-5, 3-5 Big West), UH came out on a mission. The 'Bows held Fullerton to a season-low 53 points, nearly 25 points below their season-average. The Titans shot just 29 percent after intermission to allow UH to turn a seven-point lead into a comfortable 23-point victory.

Meanwhile, UH got a balanced attack on offense with four different players in double figures, led  by Junior Madut with 14 points. James Jean-Marie finished with 13 points, while both Casdon Jardine and Justin Webster each posted 12 points and seven rebounds.

UH took a 42-35 lead at halftime, despite the Titans shooting 57 percent and UH just 38 percent. The 'Bows, however, turned the ball over just once in the first 20 minutes and absolutely dominated the boards with 10 of their 21 first-half rebounds coming on the offense end.

They continued that rebound dominance in the second half, ending with a 48-27 margin for the game with Mate Colina leading UH with a career-high 11 rebounds while coming off the bench. UH out-scored the Titans 20-1 on second-chance points and 36-26 in the paint.

UH poured it on the second half when they shot a scalding 58 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, the Titans finishied just 21 percent (4-of-19) on three-pointers for the gmae, a stark contrast from Friday's contest when they hit half their attempts from long range (9-of-18)

With the road split at Fullerton, UH has now won in four of its last five games at Titan Gym and six of the last seven overall in the series.

The 'Bows now return home for a pair of games against Big West leader and defending champions UC Irvine on January 29 and 30 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. for both games.
