It has been 10 years since the University of Hawai'i baseball team captured the 2010 WAC Tournament title in Mesa, Ariz. The trophy marked the team's first conference title since 1992 and it marked the first of back-to-back titles the Rainbow Warriors won.
Former Hawai'i pitcher, and current KHON2 anchor, Sam Spangler (2008-10) hosts MLBers Kolten Wong (2009-11), Greg Garcia (2008-10) and David Freitas (2010) as the group reminisces back on their time in Manoa, the department's success in 2010 and how they translated the Hawai'i Aloha into their current clubhouses.
The 2010 team produced three Big Leaguers (Garcia, Freitas, Wong), four top-10 round draft picks (Josh Slaats – 5th, '10; Garcia – 7th, '10; Wong – 1st, '11; Lenny Linsky – 2nd, '11) and 11 total overall MLB Draft selections (Garcia, Freitas, Wong, Slaats '10, Linsky '11, Spangler '11, Blair Walters '11, Randy Yard '11, Alex Capaul '11, Matt Sisto '12, and Breland Almadova '12).
After finishing the 2010 regular season ranked fourth in the WAC, the Rainbow Warriors beat fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech in the first round, then topped second-seeded New Mexico State, before beating top-seeded Fresno State in two of the next three games to take the title and automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
Wong, who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals, won the 2019 Rawlings Gold Glove at second base and helped the Cardinals to the NLCS. Wong was the WAC Tournament MVP, had a walk-off home run against Louisiana Tech in the WAC Tournament and finished second behind Garcia on the team in average for the season (.357). Garcia, currently a San Diego Padre, led the team in average (.358) and led the conference in triples (5). Freitas, now with the Milwaukee Brewers mashed 10 home runs and had 49 RBI for the Rainbow Warriors in his lone season with the Rainbow Warriors. Spangler was one of two pitchers in the WAC to not allow a home run (Slaats was the other), and led the conference in strikeouts looking.
