The 2019-20 University of Hawai'i athletics season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it featured success from its student-athletes and teams both on the playing fields/courts and in the classroom. The year was highlighted by two team and nine individual postseason appearances.

Team
- The Rainbow Warrior football team came from behind to defeat BYU in the 2019 SoFi Hawai'i Bowl, 38-34. It was UH's 13th all-time bowl appearance and third in the last four seasons under head coach Nick Rolovich.
- The women's volleyball team won the Big West title to receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament for their 38th overall and 27th consecutive appearance. The Rainbow Wahine hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the first time since 2013 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2015.

Hawai'i Posts Record APR Score / 11 Teams Record Perfect Single-Year Scores
- UH recorded an all-time high Academic Performance Rate (APR) score of 984. The multiyear score is an average of all UH sports and based out of 1,000.
- UH's score bettered last year's previous high of 981 and is above the national average of 983 for the first time. This year marked the sixth consecutive year that UH improved its multiyear score from the previous year.
- Men's swimming and diving posted a perfect multiyear score of 1,000 and earned NCAA Public Recognition for being in the top 10 of their respective sport. In addition, a record 11 of the school's 18 teams posted perfect single-year scores of 1,000 during the 2018-19 academic year, eclipsing the previous high of nine set two years ago. The eleven teams to record 1,000 were: men's basketball, men's golf, men's swim & dive, men's tennis, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's tennis, women's track & field, women's volleyball, and women's water polo)
- Thirteen teams posted multiyear scores of 980 or higher while five programs recorded their highest multiyear scores ever – men's swimming (1,000), men's volleyball (995), women's beach volleyball (963), women's swimming (997), and women's track and field (993). Eleven of those teams also matched or bettered their respective sports' national average including six of the seven men's teams.

Football
- Won the SoFi Hawai'i Bowl for the second time in four seasons after a come-from-behind 38-34 victory over rival BYU.
- Since joining the Mountain West in 2012, UH captured its first West Division title and made its first-ever MW Championship game appearance.
- Finished the season with 10 wins for just the seventh time in program history and first since 2010.
- Three Warrior receivers – Cedric Byrd, JoJo Ward, and Jared Smart – eclipsed 1,000-yards receiving, marking the second time in program history and only the sixth time in FBS history.
- Head coach Nick Rolovich was selected as the Mountain West's Coach of the Year while 11 players were named to the all-conference teams (1st, 2nd, and honorable mention), including first-team receiver Cedric Byrd.
- For the second consecutive year, finished in the Top 10 nationally in passing (337.1 avg.), while quarterback Cole McDonald became just the fourth UH player to throw for 4,000-yards in a season.
- Opened the season with three consecutive Pac-12 opponents, including wins over Arizona and Oregon State.
- Won two of its rivalry trophy games, retaining the Island Showdown Trophy against UNLV and winning the inaugural Dick Tomey Legacy Trophy over San Jose State.
- Seven Warriors were invited to postseason all-star games – Rojesterman Farris II (NFLPA Collegiate), Dayton Furuta (Hula), Solomon Matautia (Hula), Ikem Okeke (Hula), Kaimana Padello (Hula), Jason-Matthew Sharsh (Hula), and JoJo Ward (Hula) – while quarterback Cole McDonald participated and had a strong showing in the NFL Scouting Combine.
- Todd Graham was hired in January, becoming the program's 24th head coach.
Women's Soccer
- Ended the season at 6-8-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the Big West Conference, marking the best win percentage ever for the program in conference play.
- Received the program's first-ever bid into the Big West Conference tournament as the No. 4 seed.
- Head coach Michele Nagamine was awarded as the conference coach of the year, the first of her career at UH.
- Senior Alexis Mata was named the conference goalkeeper of the year after she led the conference in saves this season, tying her career-high with 96. She also led the conference in minutes played at 1636:11, ranked second in save percentage at .800, and was third in shutouts with five.
- Mata, along with freshman midfielder Eliza Ammendolia and sophomore forward Kayla Ryan were selected to the all-conference firstTeam.
- Senior forward Kayla Watanabe and sophomore defender Elena Palacious were named to the all-conference second team. While freshman forward, Kelci Sumida was an honorable mention.
- Both Ammendolia and Sumida were also appointed to the all-freshman squad.
- UH was second in the conference in goals scored versus conference opponents with 14 and ranked third in goals allowed with 10. UH was also one of the more aggressive teams of moving the ball around, ranking second in the league in assists with 14 and racked up a total of 42 points on the year, also second in the conference.
Women's Volleyball
- Won the Big West Conference title for the first time since 2016 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals (Madison, Wisc.) for the first time since 2015.
- Hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds for the first time since 2013 at the Stan Sheriff Center
- Finished the season with a 26-4 overall record—its most wins since 2016. It is the 40th time in UH recorded over 20 wins. The 'Bows won the BWC title with a 14-2 record.
- After two seasons, UH returned to the AVCA Top 25 rankings. The 'Bows were ranked the entire regular season, rising to as high as No. 11 (Sept. 23) and finished ranked at No. 15 in the final poll of the season. UH was ranked No. 11 in the final NCAA Ratings Percent Index (RPI)
- Hawai'i swept the Big West's major awards - Co-Head Coach of the Year Robyn Ah Mow; Norene Iosia was named Player of the Year, and Hanna Hellvig took home Freshman of the Year honors. Hellvig, Iosia, Igiede and Skyler Williams all were voted to the All-BWC First Team, while McKenna Ross and Brooke Van Sickle earned a spot on the honorable mention team. Hellvig and Igiede were both named to the All-Freshman Team
- Ah Mow was also named AVCA Pacific North Region Coach of the Year
- Iosia earned AVCA All-America honorable mention and Pacific North all-region first team honors. The senior setter/opposite closed out her four-year career ranked at No. 9 in assists (3,148); No. 8 in digs (1,175); tied at No. 2 in service aces (139). She recorded 64 double-doubles and five triple-doubles.
- Freshman Hanna Hellvig earned VolleyballMag.com Freshman All-America and AVCA all-Region honors after leading UH with 348 kills while averaging 3.11 kills p/set
- Freshman Amber Igiede was named AVCA all-Region after finishing the year with a Big West-best 1.33 blocks per set/128 total blocks and she was No. 4 with a .355 hitting percentage.
- Junior transfer Jolie Rasmussen started the season on fire leading UH to upset wins over No. 21 San Diego and No. 13 Washington. For her efforts, Rasmussen, who posted 56 kills, 17 digs and 13 blocks, was named Sports Imports/AVCA National and Big West Player of the Week Honors.
Cross Country
- Improved team average time at NCAA West Region Championship by two minutes and 20 seconds.
- Improved team finish at NCAA West Region Championship by five total places finishing 30th.
- Led by graduate student Shannon McClish in five different races including the NCAA West Region Championships.
- Freshman Rebecca DeKay led the Rainbow Wahine at the Big West Championships, her second team-leading time of the season.
- Big West Championship and NCAA West Region Championships travel squad consisted of four freshmen and three upperclassmen.
- Two of the top five finishers at Big West Championships and NCAA West Region Championships were freshmen.
Men's B
asketball
- Finished with a winning record for the seventh time in the last eight years.
- Finished with a winning non-conference record for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons.
- Won five of its first six Big West games and finished with its eighth straight non-losing season in the Big West.
- Also led the Big West in attendance for the eighth straight season (5,717).
- Won six games in which it trailed with five minutes left in regulation. Among them, UH overcame a 17-point deficit with 10 minutes left at home against CSUN and a 13-point deficit with four minutes left on the road at UC Davis.
- UH's 40-point win over Maine in its non-conference finale was its largest margin of victory since a 51-win point win over UH Hilo in November 2013 and its largest margin of victory over a Division I school since a 44-point win over Oregon State in November 2006.
- Junior Drew Buggs passed Troy Bowe as the school's all-time leader in assists, a mark the stood for nearly 30 years. Buggs completed the season with 437 career assists.
- Buggs led the Big West in assists (5.4 apg) for the second straight season.
- Senior Eddie Stansberry, finished second in the Big West in scoring (15.9 ppg) and became the first UH player to earn first-team all-league honors since 2017.
- Stansberry also became the first UH player to earn Big West Player of the Week three times in a single-season.
- Stansberry's three-pointers attempted (249), free throw percentage (.881) and three-pointers made (90), ranked first, second, and third, respectively, in the UH single-season charts.
- Senior Zigmars Raimo finished his career having played 114 career games, tied for sixth all-time at UH.
Women's
Basketball
- Wrapped up the season with a 16-14 record overall and 9-7 in the Big West Conference.
- Earned the No. 4 seed of the conference tournament, and beat No. 6 Cal State Fullerton in the quarterfinals. Were scheduled to play No. 2 UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals, but the game and the tournament were canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
- Junior forward Amy Atwell was named Best Sixth Player of the Year. In 26 games, Atwell started in 13, but only started in one conference game, leading to her being one of the top-scoring threats in the conference coming from the bench. She accounted for 10. 7 points per game and racked up seven games of scoring 10 or more points against Big West teams. She ranked No. 1 in three-point field goal percentage at .468 in conference games and finished No. 2 in three-point field goals made at 36.
- Senior guard Julissa Tago was named to the all-conference first team. Tago, a two-time Big West Player of the week, averaged 14.9 points per game this season, including 18 points per game against conference opponents. She turned in an impressive season offensively as she finished in the top 15 of seven different categories in games against conference teams, including scoring, field goal percentage, assists, free throw percentage, three-point field percentage, three-pointers made, and minutes played.
- Junior guard Jadynn Alexander was named the all-defensive team, freshman guard Nae Nae Calhoun was appointed to the All-Freshmen squad, while Atwell was also named an honorable mention.
- On Feb. 27, Tago hit eight three-pointers in the game, breaking the previous UH single-game mark of six. She also eclipsed Megan Tinnin's previous single-season made three-pointers record of 55, finishing her career and setting a new mark of 66.
- During the final game of the regular season, Tago became the 22nd member of the 1,000 point club for the Rainbow Wahine program, finished her career with 1,025 points.
- The Rainbow Wahine shattered the record for most three-pointers made in one game with 18 while breaking the team record for most three's in a game at the Stan Sheriff Center on Jan. 18 against Cal State Fullerton. The Titans joined UH in combining for 23 made three-pointers breaking the single-game record in UH history and at the Stan Sheriff.
- The 'Bows picked up two big nonconference wins beginning first with Texas (73-60) on Dec. 1 of the Heineken Rainbow Wahine Showdown, and seven days later took down Washington (60-52) on the road.
Men's Swimming and Diving
- Claimed the programs second straight MPSF championship with a total of 895.50 points, 80 points better than second-place BYU.
- The Rainbow Warriors notched eight first-place victories in the MPSF Championships, including six individual and two relays.
- Junior' aukai Lileikis was the only 'Bow to claim two individual titles, along with two relay championships, totaling a team-high four at the MPSF championships.
- Before the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, three student-athletes qualified for the national stage, senior Olli Kokko, sophomore diver Max Burman, and Lileikis.
- Seniors Kane Follows and Mateusz Chaba, teamed up with Kokko and Lileikis to set a new conference record of 3:08.59 in the 400 medley relay.
- Kokko claimed a new record in 100 breast event at the MPSF Championships with a time of 52.34.
- The Warriors were named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team with a 3.47 GPA.
Women's Swimming and Diving
- Won the program's fourth straight MPSF championship with a total of 726 points, 20 points better than second-place UC Santa Barbara.
- The Rainbow Wahine notched 14 first-place victories in the MPSF Championships, including 11 individual and three relays.
- All four, including senior Phoebe Hines, juniors Lucia Lassman, Kionna Clayton, and Karolina Hajkova won two individual championships, along with relay titles.
- Before the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, five student-athletes qualified for the national stage, junior Ivy Davis, sophomore Daphne Wils, Hines, Lassman, and Hajkova.
- During the MPSF Championships Wils set two new conference records in the one-meter (388.40) and three-meter (363.00).
- The combination of junior Anna Kotonen, Clayton, Lassman, and Hajokva broke the conference record in the 400 medley relay at 3:35.84.
- The Wahine were named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team with a 3.46 GPA.
Basebal
l
- Best 15-game start to the season since 2017.
- Topped a top-five team for the first time since 2013 when they upset #2 Vanderbilt on February 29.
- Junior Jeremy Wu-Yelland was drafted 118th overall in the 4th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2020 MLB Draft.
- Two junior pitchers signed free-agent contracts with MLB teams in June. Carter Loewen signed with the Padres and Cade Smith signed with the Cleveland Indians.
- Had the 40th toughest schedule in the country.
- Had the second-best stadium capacity filled per game in the West and ranked 20th in the country at 66.49 percent.
- Beat Oregon in a four-game series for the first time since 2010.
- Received votes in two polls two consecutive weeks and received votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll every week but the preseason poll.
- Led offensively by junior shortstop Kole Kaler's .407 average, nine doubles and 17 RBI. Kaler ranked sixth in the country in doubles, 10th in triples (3) and 74th in hits (24).
- Sophomore Aaron Davenport tied for second in the country in wins on the season and was one of 17 with four wins with five or fewer appearances.
- Junior Kole Kaler was named the program's first All-American since 2011 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Kaler earned third-team honors. Kaler is the 17th Rainbow Warrior to earn All-American accolades.
Beach Volleyball
- Finished fourth in the AVCA and DiG national polls after starting as a preseason No. 5 pick.
- Went 7-2 and won its final five matches in an abbreviated 2020 season.
- Only two losses can against LSU and UCLA who finished first and second, respectively, in the national rankings.
- Five of the team's seven wins came against ranked teams, including a 3-2 win over then-ranked No. 3 LSU.
- Senior Julia Scoles and Maia Hannemann were named Big West Pairs Team of the Week after going 4-1 in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic, highlighted by straight set wins over pairs from No. 1 UCLA and No. 3 LSU.
- Hannemann was tabbed as Best Defender for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic.
- UH went a perfect 4-0 at the Bay Area Classic while winning 18 of 20 courts and defeating a pair of ranked squads in No. 19 Arizona State and No. 20 Stanford.
- Freshman pair Hanna Helvig and Ihilani Huddleston went a team-best 8-1 on the season and ended the season on a six-match win streak. The pair played all but two of their matches at the No. 4 flight.
- Seniors Morgan Martin and Amy Ozee concluded their careers among the all-time leaders in wins at UH. Martin finished fourth in dual match (91) and sixth in overall wins (93), while Ozee finished fifth in dual match (79) and tied for seventh in overall wins (79).
Men's Golf
- Competed in six tournaments, hosting four including the inaugural Hoakalei Country Club Invitational in 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu.
- Freshman Kotaro Murata was named Big West Conference Golfer of the Month (February) after two Top 10 finishes at two highly competitive tournaments – Amer Ari Invitational (t-10th) and John A. Burns Intercollegiate (t-7th).
- Murata finished with a team-best 72.6 scoring average, the lowest by a UH golfer in over a dozen years.
- Junior Justin Ngan carded the season's low round, 6-under 66 in the second round of the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational.
- Seniors Nick Nelson and Trevor Hirata completed their UH careers with scoring averages of 76.1 and 77.9, respectively. The duo combined to compete in 47 career tournaments.
Women's Golf
- In what turned out to be its final tournament of the season, placed fifth among 16 teams at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, which it hosted at the Kāne'ohe Klipper Golf Course with a season-best 886 total
- Junior Tyra Tonkham posted two Top 10 finishes at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (t-4th) and Donnis Thompson Invitational (t-8th).
- Tonkham finished with a team-best 75.5 scoring average with four rounds under par, including a season-low 3-under 69 in the final round of the Donnis Thompson Invitational.
- Played host to two tournaments and were scheduled to host a third, the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic in Kapalua, Maui before the season was cancelled.
- Tonkham earned Big West Conference co-Golfer of the Month honors after her eighth place finish at the Thompson Invitational.
- Senior Megan Ratcliffe competed in all seven tournaments in her final season and finished her four-year career with a 76.8 scoring average in 31 career tournaments. Senior Malia Ebersberger completed an injury-plagued career with an 80.4 scoring average in nine career tournaments.
Coed Sailing
- Competed in seven regattas during an abbreviated 2019-20 season.
- Finished in the top five in six of the team regattas it competed in.
- Captured the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite for the sixth straight year.
- UH fielded three coed squads in the 17-team Rainbow Invite with all of them finishing in the top four.
- Also finished runner-up at the PCCSC Match Race Championship in October, the program's best finish in the event's five-year history.
- Senior Patrick Wilkinson completed his senior season by competing in all seven regattas and captured his first-ever event by skippering UH to a win in the A division of the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite.
Women's Sailing
- Competed in seven regattas during an abbreviated 2019-20 season.
- Best finish came in its final event of the year, placing third at the South Florida Intersectional.
- Sophomore Kahala Furukawa skippered UH to a win in the B division in the regatta, her first career event win.
- In all Furukawa, finished in the top two among B division women's teams in all four regattas competed in.
- Seniors Isabelle Anderson and Megan Lucas capped their senior seasons by each crewing in all four team regattas. Lucas helped crew UH to a B division win at the South Florida Intersectional.
Softball
- The softball team had just begun to compete in its final pre-season tournament when the season was halted. The Rainbow Wahine finished with a 9-15 record.
- Senior catcher/first baseman Callee Heen led Hawai'i at the plate, hitting .358 (24-for-67) with a team-high seven home runs, 14 walks, 23 RBI, a .731 slugging percentage and 1.225 on-base percentage. The lefty-slugger finishes her career ranked No. 4 with 45 home runs and No. 5 with 84 walks in the UH record books.
- Junior transfer Nawai Kaupe made an immediate impact, starting all 24 games at shortstop. She recorded a team-high 25 hits and was second on the team with a .347 batting average (25-for-72) and 16 runs scored. She was tied for the team-high with Heen with seven homers. Heen finishes her career with a .330 batting average with 154 hits, 136 RBI and a slugging percentage of .675.
- Senior Angelique "Cheeks" Ramos had started all 24 games at third base after playing mostly shortstop her first three seasons at UH. She finished the season third on the team hitting .301 (22-for 73).
- In the pitching circle, sophomore Isabella "Izzy" Dino finished with a 4-5 record and a 3.76 ERA in 11 appearances. She fired five complete games and threw 57.2 innings.
- Sophomore Ashley Murphy made a team-high 12 appearances and ended with a 4-6 record with a 4.84 ERA in 59.1 innings pitched (team-high). Both Dino and Murphy had 24 strikeouts apiece.
- Junior southpaw Emily Klee did not figure in any decisions but did well as a reliever, recording a team-best 2.39 ERA in 10 appearances and 14.2 innings pitched.
Men's Tennis
- The men's tennis team under first year head coach Joël Kusnierz was off to its best start since 2006 with a 9-6 record when its season cut short prematurely.
- Sophomore Andre Ilagan became just the sixth Rainbow Warrior to be ranked in the ITA rankings in the last 10 years and the first since Blaz Seric was ranked No. 124 in 2018. Ilagan entered the poll at No. 117 (March 3). Ilagan ended the season with a 7-5 record—all played on the No. 1 singles.
- Freshman Axel Labrunie and Junior Blaz Seric were tied for the most singles wins on the team with identical 10-3 records.
- In doubles, UH's No. 1 duo of Lucas Labrunie and Ilagan had a team-best 10-2 record to lead the 'Bows.
- Senior Chia-Hua Lu played primarily doubles, recording a 7-4 record with Simao Telo Alves on the No. 3 court. In singles, he went 0-2 playing at No. 6.
- Junior Tristan Martins also played his final match of his Rainbow Warrior career as he will be graduating in the Fall. Martins was solid, posting an 8-2 record on the No. 6 singles court.
Women's Tennis
- The women's tennis team started the season with a tough gauntlet of opponents, falling to No. 14 Washington, No. 16 Florida State and No. 1 Stanford. But after battling those top ranked team, the 'Bows won five of their next seven matches to even their record at 5-5 before the season was cancelled. In all, four of their losses came to ranked teams.
- Hawai'i was 2-0 in Big West Conference matches with wins over UC Irvine and Long Beach State.
- Senior Petra Melounova ends her stellar career as one of the most highly decorated athlete in UH history. The 2019 ITA All-America, three-time Big West Player of the Year and three-time NCAA tournament participant finished her career with a 51-15 singles record which ranks her No. 16 in the UH career record books. In her senior season, she had a 5-4 record in singles and a 3-3 doubles record. Melounova was on a roll, winning her last three-straight matches of her career.
- Newcomers Satsuki Takamura and Madison Kim led UH in singles with seven wins apiece. Takamura, a sophomore transfer, had a 7-3 record. She was 2-1 at No.1, 4-1 at No. 2, and 1-2 at No. 3. She started the season ranked at No. 103 after a strong fall season. After defeating Stanford's No. 49 Janice Shin on the No. 3 court on the road, Takamura re-entered the rankings at No. 109.
- Kim, a freshman, posted a 7-4 singles record, going 5-4 in dual matches mostly at the No. 6 position.
- In doubles, senior Nikola Dolakova led UH with a 4-3 record while freshman Rebecca Ehn had a 4-4 record.
Indoor Track and Field
- Four school records set during the season.
- Three school records set at the MPSF Championships in Seattle, Wash.
- Junior Kristen LaCosse broke or tied two school records, including the long jump record set in 2005.
- New school record in the 1,600-meter relay by LaCosse, seniors Natasha Currence and Teuila Gardner, and freshman Tierra Sydnor at the MPSF Championships.
- Senior Calli-Ann Abbott broke the school record in the pentathlon's 60-meter hurdles.
- Abbott scored Hawai'i's point at the MPSF Championships.
Men's Volleyball
- Ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the first eight weeks of the season, including the program's first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking.
- Began the year 15-1 before the season was cut short, which was tied for the second-best 16-match start in program history.
- The team's final match was an epic come-from-behind, reverse sweep of No. 2 Brigham Young in front of a sold-out crowd at the Stan Sheriff Center.
- Finished as the nation's leader in hitting percentage (.371) for the second consecutive year and attendance (5,233 avg.) for the fourth straight year.
- Saw its 25-match home winning streak come to an end in the BYU series opener, a streak that was one win shy of tying for the longest in program history.
- The senior class of James Anastassiades, Colton Cowell, Patrick Gasman, and Rado Parapunov finished with 89 victories, one win shy of the most wins during a four-year period.
- Parapunov and libero Gage Worsley were named to the AVCA All-America first team for the second consecutive year while Cowell and Gasman were selected to the second team.
- Parapunov was the Big West Conference's Player of the Year while Gasman, Cowell, and Worsley were named all-Big West first team.
- Parapunov ranked No. 3 nationally in both kills per set (4.47) and points per set (5.28) while his 91 career aces ranked 10th all-time in program history.
- Gasman finished his career with 389 career blocks that ranked No. 6 in program history and was having a career season in kills (1.84 avg.) and aces (18).
Water Polo
- Program's best start to the season in program history with an 11-game winning streak to start the year.
- Ranked as high as third in the country in the Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Poll when 8-0.
- Led offensively by sophomore Alba Bonamusa Boix's 37 goals and 18 assists and defensively by Bridget Layburn and Molly DiLalla in goal.
- Topped Arizona State twice on the season including a 15-5 win when the Sun Devils were ranked fifth in the country.
- Finished fourth at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
- Finished the season with an 11-2 record.
