KĀNE'OHE, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team moved up four spots to finish in fifth place after the final round of the 35
th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Wednesday at the Kāne'ohe Klipper Golf Course in Marines Corps Base Hawai'i.
The Rainbow Wahine carded a season-best 1-over 289 for a season-best 54-hole total of 886. Third-ranked Arizona State went wire-to-wire to run away with its second Thompson Invitational title with an 852 total, 19 strokes ahead of No. 45 TCU (871). No. 54 Ohio State placed third at 872.
UH placed higher than eight teams ahead of them in the national rankings including Top 50 San Diego State, who finished two strokes behind the Rainbow Wahine at 888.
The individual title came down to a playoff between ASU's Linn Grant held and TCU's Sabrina Iqbal, who both completed 54 holes in 7-under 209. Grant captured the title with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole.
For the Rainbow Wahine, junior
Tyra Tonkham carded a 3-under 69, the lowest round for the team this season, to finish even par 216 and a tie for eighth place. Her round included six birdies to boost her tourney total to 12, second highest to Iqbal's 15. Tonkham completed her final 36 holes in 4-under par to post her second Top 10 of the season and third of her career.
Senior
Megan Ratcliffe carded 1-over 73 to finish at 3-over 219 and a tie for 13
th place. Her 3-over total was a career-low in relation to par. Junior
Sahara Washington holed out from her fairway on her last hole to also shoot 73 and finish in a tie for 22
nd at 6-over 222.
Sophomore
Haruka Shintani posted a final round 74 to finish at 231 and a tie for 54
th place while junior
Zoey Akagi-Bustin carded 80 for a 239 total and 73
rd place. Two Rainbow Wahine competed as individuals – senior
Malia Ebersberger (79, t-69
th) and freshman
Kralyn Salazar (86, 87
th).
UH will next host the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic, March 23-25 at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.
