Women's Tennis Knocks Off Long Beach State

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (4-5, 2-0 Big West) knocked off Long Beach State, 4-3 to remain undefeated in conference play on a soggy Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex. After starting the match late due to inclement weather, the two teams started with singles. Freshman Madison Kim clinched the match coming back to down Lalita Devarkonda in three sets on the No. 6 court.

Both teams played through the blustery wind conditions and passing showers starting with singles. The Rainbow Wahine won four of the six singles matches for the win over The Beach. Hawai'i's No. 4 Michelle Pits finished first with a loss against LBSU's
Wiktoria Rutkowska 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 Bojana Markovic evened the match defeating Sadaf Sadeghvaziri in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. No. 2 Satsuki Takamura gave UH a 2-1 lead after edging out LBSU's Emma Bardet, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. No. 1 Petra Melounova battled back from being a set down to defeat Long Beach State's Natalie Munoz, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. No. 5 Nikola Dolokova also fought back to take Zara Lennon to three sets as well, but came up short at 3-6, 6-2, 3-6. The game clinching match fell upon the shoulders of No. 6 Madison Kim, who engaged Lalita Devarkonda in a slugfest in the first set and it ended with Kim cruising in the third set for the win, 7-6 (12-10), 3-6, 6-2.

With the match already decided, the two teams completed the match by playing doubles. The Rainbow Wahine were swept 3-0. UH's No. 1 duo of Takamura and Markovic finished first, falling 6-1 to Munoz and Lennon. Similarly, No. 3 Rebecca Ehn and Sophia Storch lost 6-1 against Devarkonda and Sadeghvaziri. On the No. 2 court Kim and Pits dropped their match to Rutkowska and Bardet, 4-6.

Hawai'i will continue their five match home stand with three non-conference matches, starting this week with Stetson on March 4 at 3:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
