Men’s Basketball Faces UC Irvine In Nationally-Televised “Whiteout” Game

GATES OPEN AT 5:30 P.M.
HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team faces Big West leader UC Irvine in a "Whiteout" game on ESPN2. Tipoff for the game is 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. All fans are encouraged to wear white on an evening in which UH great Bob Nash will have his jersey retired.

UH season-ticket holders in any UH sport will receive 50% off select adult tickets (maximum of eight. A valid identification card is required when purchasing tickets at the Stan Sheriff Center. Supplies are limited and other restrictions may apply.
Coaches: Head coach Eran Ganot is in his fifth season at UH (83-52). Russell Turner is in his 10th season at UC Irvine (204-138).
Series Information: UC Irvine leads, 16-6.
Promotions: First Hawaiian Bank is the sponsor on Saturday and will distribute 3,000 t-shirts and 850 rally towels.  At halftime UH Athletics will retire the jersey of former player and coach Bob Nash. All UH fans are encouraged to wear white.
 
Game Story Lines
  • UH faces UC Irvine for the second time this season in a nationally-televised contest on ESPN2.  
  • The first-place Anteaters are 2.5 games ahead of the Rainbow Warriors who have dropped to third in the Big West with three straight losses.
  • UH has lost five straight to UC Irvine and seven of the last eight. The Anteaters defeated UH 74-60 in the first meeting in Irvine on Jan. 11. 
  • UH saw its five-game home win streak snapped with a 50-49 loss to Long Beach State on Wednesday night.
  • UH's 49 points against the Beach was a season low and team's lowest offensive output since scoring 45 against Illinois State in December 2016.
  • Eddie Stansberry had 19 points vs. LBSU and is ranked 20th nationally in 3FG/game (3.1).  
  • UH is 13-4 at home this year, 4-1 in Big West play. UC Irvine is 5-8 on the road, 3-2 in league.
  • Following its game vs. UCI, UH will head to California for a pair of games at UC Riverside (Feb. 20) and Long Beach State (Feb. 22)..

Scouting UC Irvine
  • UC Irvine has won eight of its first 10 Big West games to sit in first in the league.
  • The Anteaters have won five of its last six with its lone loss at UCSB on Feb. 8.
  • UC Irvine rallied for a 63-59 win at UC Riverside in its last outing on Wednesday. 
  • The Anteaters rank seconds in the NCAA in rebound margin (+9.5) and 13th in field goal percentage defense (.380).
  • Sophomore forward Colin Welp leads UCI at 13.8 ppg while adding 6.2 rpg. Senior guards Eyassu Worku and Evan Leonard chip in 11.9 and 11.7 ppg, respectively.
 
Bob Nash Jersey Retirement
UH basketball will retire its first jersey when former UH great #33 Bob Nash is honored at halftime of UH's game vs. UC Irvine on Saturday.
  • Nash (1970-72) was the centerpiece on the Fabulous Five team that captivated the state and took UH to both the NIT and NCAAs for the first time ever.
  • Nash is UH's first-ever All-American.
  • He was UH's first-ever NBA 1st round draft pick (9th overall, Detroit Pistons, 1972).
  • He is one of just three players in school history to average a career double-double.
  • He served as an assistant and head coach for UH basketball for a combined 29 years.
