HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team had little trouble in a 89-66 win over UH Hilo Saturday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 2-0 with its second straight win over a Division II team to start the year.
UH led from wire-to-wire in remaining undefeated all-time (11-0) against the Vulcans. The 'Bows led by 10 points at halftime then put the foot on the pedal after the break, building its lead to as many as 30 points.
Justin Webster led a balanced UH attack with 15 points.
Casdon Jardine posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while
James Jean-Marie (12 points) and
Justin Hemsley (10) also made their impact off the bench. All 14 of the team's suited players saw action with 13 getting in the scoring column.
Webster helped break the game open in the second half with eight points in the first three minutes. Like their opening win over Hawaii Pacific a week earlier, the 'Bows rode a strong second half to victory. UH shot 61 percent from the floor after the break. But unlike their opener when UH was frigid from long range, this time around UH was efficient, going 9-of-19 from behind the arc.
The 'Bows were also solid defensively, holding the Vulcans to 37 percent shooting from the floor, including 4-of-20 on threes. UH dominated the glass, 53-28.
The Rainbow Warriors now set their sights on Big West play. UH will open its conference schedule at home where they will host Cal Poly on Dec. 27 (5 p.m.) and 28 (7 p.m.) on back-to-back nights.
