Rainbow Wahine Drop Season Opener To HPU, 82-74

HONOLULU— In a game of wild momentum shifts, Hawaii Pacific had the final say in an 82-74 upset of the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team Sunday evening from SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

The Sharks (1-0) sank 15 three-pointers and used a 10-1 run in the waning minutes to spoil the 2020-21 season opener for the Rainbow Wahine. It marked UH's first-ever loss to HPU in 11 all-time meetings.

HPU extended their win streak to 26 straight games dating back to last season. The Sharks were 29-1 and ranked No. 3 nationally in the Division II poll before last year's abrupt end to the season.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-1) lost despite a stellar performance by Amy Atwell. The senior forward led UH with 21 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior returnee Jadynn Alexander chipped in 10 points, while freshman guard Daejah Phillips made a favorable impression in her debut, counting for 11 points and five rebounds.

On the other side of the court, Olivia West and Amy Baum combined for 50 points, leading the sharks. The duo hit 7-of-15 from long range, while Baum added nine assists to her stat line.

The game remained close throughout as HPU took a 62-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UH began the final frame with a 15-3 run to take a 67- 65 lead and eventually bring the score to a 69-69 stalemate with two minutes left. But the Sharks end the contest with a 13-5 stretch to close out the effort by the 'Bows.

UH will now look ahead to set Dec. 27 when the Big West Conference season starts on the road at Cal Poly. In the two weeks leading up to the next scheduled game, the 'Bows could add a potential second non-conference matchup in the process.
