University of Hawai'i senior offensive lineman
Taaga Tuulima was selected to the Rimington Trophy Watch List. The Rimington Trophy is awarded to the nation's top center.
Tuulima has made all but two starts over the last two seasons at center and was one of just five players to start every game last season. The 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu native has helped anchor the unit for an offense that ranked in the Top 10 nationally in passing in 2018 and 2019.
In 2019, Tuulima was named honorable mention all-Mountain West and selected as the team's June Jones Offensive Most Valuable Player. He is also a three-time academic all-Mountain West selection and UH Scholar-Athlete.
Tuulima is one of six centers from the Mountain West on the watch list along with Colorado State's Cam Reddy, Fresno State's Matt Smith, New Mexico's Kyle Stapley, San Jose State's Kyle Hoppe, and Wyoming's Keegan Cryder.
UH's only Rimington Trophy finalist was John Estes in 2009.
The Rimington Trophy Committee adjusted its procedures with consideration to the COVID-19 pandemic, choosing to hold its 2020 watch list until play began and a plan was implemented across all Division I conferences. This year, it accepted all nominations from eligible Division I programs with the goal of highlighting as many collegiate centers as possible and showing the outstanding commitment of the following students athletes.
Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
