Men's Tennis Drops Rain Delayed Doubleheader To Arizona

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (0-3) dropped both matches in a rain delayed, make-up doubleheader against Arizona on Monday at the UH Tennis Complex. The Wildcats won the first match, which was originally started on Saturday afternoon, 4-1. Arizona then won the second match, 6-1 to end the marathon day on Monday.
 
Match #1: Arizona 4, Hawai'i 1
The match that was originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 was finally concluded on Monday afternoon. After edging out the Rainbow Warriors to capture the doubles point on Saturday, Arizona was able to hold off the 'Bows to win three singles matches to earn their first win of the 2020 season, 4-1. The match was was closer than what the final score indicates. Recording his first collegiate win was freshman Axel Labrunie who was able to defeat Arizona's Igor Karpovets in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
 
Match #2: Arizona 6, Hawai'i 1
In the second match of the doubleheader, Hawai'i had a strong start, taking the doubles point. UH's No. 1 Andre Ilagan/Lucas Labrunie nearly blanked Arizona's Steward Block/ Jonas Ziverts, 6-1. The Wildcats' No. 2 Filip Malbasic/Alejandro Reguant held off UH's Blaz Seric/Axel Labrunie by a break, 6-4. But UH's No. 3 duo of Chia-Hua Lu and Simao Telo Alves clinched the double point by defeating Arizona's Jared Horwood/Nick Lagaev, 7-5.
 
The Wildcats then came roaring back, winning all six singles matches –five of which were decided in straight sets—to defeat UH, 6-1. Hawai'i's Lu was the only UH player to take his match to three sets. After winning the first set, UA's Conner Olsen came back to complete the singles sweep, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
The Rainbow Warriors have 17 days to prepare for their first road trip of 2020. The 'Bows will travel to Nevada to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational. UNLV, New Mexico State, UC Riverside and Hawai'i will be playing in the three day tournament which runs from Friday, Jan. 31-Sunday, Feb. 2.
