University of Hawai'i senior placekicker
Ryan Meskell has been selected to the Lou Groza Watch List. The Lou Groza Award is presented to the nation's top placekicker and with this year's list highlights 30 of the best returning kickers in the country.
Â
Meskell, a native of Gold Coast, Australia, excelled in his first year as the team's primary placekicker. He connected on 15-of-18 field goals for the year, and finished second in the MW in field goal accuracy (.833). He also converted 46-for-47 extra point attempts. By season's end, he was selected as the team's Coach Dave Holmes Most Improved Player.
Â
Two other Mountain West placekickers made the Watch List: Utah State's Dominik Eberle, a 20017 finalist, and Wyoming's Cooper Rothe, who was a finalist last year. UH's lone Lou Groza Award finalist was Jason Elam in 1992.
Â
The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
