Thomas Selected in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft

HONOLULU—After 40 rounds and 1,217 picks, the three-day 2019 Major League Baseball amateur draft concluded on Wednesday afternoon as redshirt junior pitcher Dylan Thomas of the University of Hawai'i was selected in the 13th round by the Minnesota Twins.

A year ago Thomas was selected in the 38th round of the draft by the Twins, but elected to stay another year with the Rainbow Warriors. In his return to O'ahu, he produced a 2.01 ERA over 53.2 innings pitched, accounting for 59 strikeouts. This year the Twins made their selection of Thomas 25 rounds earlier with the 389th overall pick.

Upon his selection in the draft, Thomas is one of the most decorated pitchers to come through the program, including being honored by the Big West Conference three years in a row. In 2019 he was named to the second team with a 1.14 ERA, over 23.2 innings of work and 18 strikeouts. As it stands, Thomas is ranked second at UH in both career ERA (1.96) and career saves (27).

With the 13th round selection, Thomas was the highest player picked from UH since the 2011 draft when the Rainbow Warriors had six selections including a first-round pick of Kolten Wong at pick No. 22. Overall, Thomas in the 103rd player selected from the program in the amateur draft.
