Baseball Series Opener Goes to Cal Poly, 12-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team could not overcome the consistent offense of Big West-leading Cal Poly in a 12-4 defeat at Baggett Stadium on Friday in game one of the three-game set.

Hawaiʻi (19-23, 7-9 Big West) saw the Mustangs (21-21, 11-2 Big West) score in seven of the eighth innings in which they hit.

Hawaiʻi responded in the top of the fifth with four runs to take the lead. Dallas Duarte singled and came around to score later in the frame on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Scotty Scott. Jack Kennelly then knocked in two runs on a single to tie the score at 3-3. Heads up base running allowed Kennelly to score from second base on a wild pitch for a 4-3 edge.

The Mustangs manufactured a fifth-inning run on a hit batsman, a bunt single and an error to level the scoring at 4-4.

Cade Smith, who started the game on the mound, exited the game with the score tied at 4-all. The sophomore went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

In the sixth, Cal Poly regained the lead with three runs to put the score at 7-4. Two more tallies in the seventh made it 9-4 in favor of the home side.
