NEWPORT, R.I. - University of Hawai'i assistant coach Jesse Andrews has been honored with a place in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Hall of Fame. Andrews joins head coach Andy Johnson after being awarded the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service by a college sailing professional Monday night at the Annual coaches meeting.
 
The Graham Hall Award recognizes organizers, administrators, advisors, or coaches in a professional capacity who have served the best interests of college sailing at the team, conference, or national level.
 
Andrews is in his 22nd year as an assistant coach of the University of Hawai'i coed and women's sailing teams. Following an All-American career as a Rainbow sailor, he jumped quickly in to coaching to give back to this alma mater and to collegiate sailing.
 
During his tenure as assistant sailing coach, Andrews has been an indispensable part of the UH program. He has helped the Rainbows to two national championship (2001- women; 2004 – coed) and to numerous PCCSC championships. The 'Bows are back at the nationals this year, competing in the 2019 ICSA Coed National Championship in Newport, R.I, May 28-31.
 
Andrews has been a hands-on coach, racing on the water to challenge his sailors and leading vigorous drills that hone their boat-handling skills. He has also spent countess hours repairing boats and other equipment at the HCC Marine Center.
 
Andrews has served the on the PCCSC board in various leadership positions over the years and continues to be a positive influence on UH student-athletes and those from across the country that he has come across over the years.
 
With Andrews' induction, four coaches in Rainbow sailing history are now members of the ICSA Hall of Fame. Ted Livingston, who founded the Rainbow sailing program in the late 1960s, was inducted in 1982 for Meritorious Service. Charlie Dole, who headed the program for nearly a decade, was inducted in 1995, also for Meritorious Service. Current head coach Andy Johnson, who has coached the squad for 30 years, was inducted in 2012 with the Graham Hall Award for Outstanding Service.
 
The ICSA Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to honor individuals for either undergraduate competitive achievement in sailing or outstanding leadership and service to the establishment, development and growth of the sport.  Andrews' name, as well as those of the other inductees this year, will be added to the ICSA College Sailing Hall of Fame, which is on permanent display in the Robert Crown Center at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
