HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (7-9, 1-1 Big West) was edged out by UC Irvine, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Anteaters won the doubles point to take the lead 1-0 lead. UC Irvine won on the No.1 and No.3 courts to capture the early 1-0 lead. On No. 1 court, UH's duo of
Andre Ilagan and Lucas
Labrunie fell to Luis Lopez and Bruce Man-son-Hing, 6-4. UCI's team on the No. 3 court Sasha Krasnov and Daniel Gealer defeated UH's
Chia-Hua Lu and
Asad Siyyid, 6-4.
UC Irvine won three of the first four singles matches finished to clinch the win for the Anteaters. But the Rainbow Warriors kept fighting. No. 3 Seric edged out Gealer in the first set via a tiebreaker, but blanked his opponent in the second set to cruise to a 7-6 (5), 6-0 win. On the No. 6 court, UH's Lu fell in a first set tiebreaker and then just a break in the second set to Mike Mkrtchian, 7-6(4), 6-4. On the No. 5 court the 'Bows' Siyyid battled back but fell just short in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The Rainbow Warriors will honor their two seniors on Sunday, April 7 in their final home match against UC Riverside at 12:00 pm at the UH Tennis Complex. UH's
Eric Kenneth and
Asad Siyyid will be playing their final home match in Hawai'i.
