Softball Comes Up Short At Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (27-11, 8-2 Big West) fell on the road at Cal State Fullerton in the series opener, 4-2. Senior pitcher Brittany Hitchcock suffered the loss, snapping her six game-win streak while junior first baseman/catcher Callee Heen launched her 13th home run of the season in the loss on Saturday night at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.

Hitchcock fell to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in conference.  She allowed four runs on six hits with no walks and a strikeout in a complete game effort.

The Titans posted one run in the first inning. With runners at first and third, Janelle Rodrigues laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Alexa Neil from third for the early 1-0 lead.

CSUF then erupted for three more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Sam Kennedy started the rally with a one out single to first. Julia Valenzuela then hit a ball to second which went for an error on the second baseman that rolled past the rightfielder to the fence for the second error on the play to allow Kennedy  to score and Valenzuela to advance to third. Back-to-back Titan doubles drove in two more runs.

In the top of the fourth, the Rainbow Wahine got on the scoreboard posting one run on a sacrifice fly hit by Cheeks Ramos which drove in Alyssa Sojka from third.

Hawai'i's Callee Heen led off the seventh inning with a solo home run over the right-centerfield fence to cut UH's deficit to two runs. It marked Heen's league and team-leading 13th home run of the season. It was also Heen's 36th career home run which moves her into a tie with teammate Nicole Lopez up to No. 6 in the UH career-home run record book.

The two teams will square off in a series ending doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 11:00 a.m. HT.
