SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (7-11, 1-3) was edged out on the road, 4-3 at Cal Poly.
The Mustangs captured the doubles point to start the match, recording a 6-4 win on the No. 3 court with CP's Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkinyk holding off UH's
Chia-Hua Lu and
Asad Siyyid. Hawai'i's No. 1
Andre Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie defeated Cal Poly's Josh Ortlip and Dominic Bechard, 6-4 to even the doubles score. But Cal Poly earned the point as Antoine Noel and Gary Vardanyan secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over
Blaz Seric and Simao Telo Alves.
In singles, Seric made quick work on the No. 3 court, defeating Alex States, 6-2, 6-2 for his eighth-straight single win to even the match at 1-1. CP's Shenkinyk gave the Mustangs back the lead on the No. 6 court with a 6-1, 6-4 win over
Tristan Martins. But Hawai'i's Labrunie defeated Noel in straight sets at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4 to knot the match at 2-2.
Cal Poly's Ortlip and UH's Ilagan were locked in a first set battle with Ortlip taking the first set in a marathon tiebreaker, 7-6 (10). Ortlip then cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set to give CP a 2-1 lead. Poly's No. 5 Bechard clinched the match with a three-set win over Lu, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
The Rainbow Warriors will close out their regular season on Sunday, April 21 as they battle UC Santa Barbara on the road.
