HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (6-9) won its third straight match shorthanded, outlasting former WAC rival San Jose State, 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the UH Tennis Courts.
Hawai'i earned the doubles point with wins on courts No. 2 and 1. UH's No. 2 duo of
Michelle Pits and
Roxanne Resma started the match defeating Miyo Kobayashi and Alba Pedrero Galindo, 6-3. Then, UH's No. 1 doubles team of
Petra Melounova and
Nikola Dolakova started their match against Savannah Sendar and Laura Malsert down 4-1 before rallied to come all the way back to win the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
The singles matches were a battle until the end. With Melounova out due to an injury, everyone moved up the ladder one slot. SJSU's No. 6, Klara Milojkovic defeated
Sophia Storch, 6-1, 6-3 to even the match at 1-1. On the No. 5 court,
Alzbeta Houbova defeated Laura Malsert, 6-1, 6-4 to give UH a 2-1 lead. UH's No. 3 Resma then rallied after losing the first set to give UH a 3-1 lead with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Sendar. SJSU's Kobayashi then edged out UH's
Maayan Sela on the No. 1 court , 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5.
The final two matches went into a tiebreaker at the end of the third sets. Hawai'i's No. 2 Dolakova finished strong to hold off Kobayashi, 6-4, 4-7(3), 7-6(5) to clinch the match for the Rainbow Wahine. Hawai'i's No. 3 Pits gave everything she had in a tiebreaker against Sendar, but their match went unfinished.
The Rainbow Wahine will host their final home match of the season against UC Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m. It will be Senior Day for UH's two seniors
Roxanne Resma and
Maayan Sela.
