TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 6 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball team fell to No. 5 Pepperdine, 3-2, before blanking host Arizona State, 5-0, in the Arizona State Invitational Friday at the PERA Club. The SandBows, winners of eight of their last nine matches, moved to 12-5 on the season.
 
UH started the day with a meeting versus No. 5 Pepperdine (13-6), its second this year against the Waves. Pepperdine beat UH, 3-2, in Honolulu on the opening day of the season and the Waves were able to replicate the feat in Arizona to snap UH's seven-match win streak.
 
After Pepperdine took the first two points of the day, Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon were able to get UH on the board with a straight set win over Alexis Filippone and Skylar Caputo. But the Waves clinched the match at the No. 2 flight where Deahna Kraft and Gigi Hernandez defeated Julia Scoles and Ari Homayun 23-21, 21-15. It was just the third loss in 15 matches for the pairing of Homayun and Scoles.  UH got an impressive three-set win by Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee at the No. 1 court to complete the scoring, but it couldn't prevent UH from falling to the Waves for the second time this season.
 
UH's second match proved much easier. In their first-ever visit to Arizona State, the SandBows cruised past the Sun Devils (10-6). The SandBows won in straight sets on four of five courts and won the lone three-set contest as Kylin Loker and Hi'ilawe Huddleston (UH) defeated Sam Plaster and Kate Baldwin 21-18, 19-21, 15-12. UH improved to 5-0 all-time against Arizona State.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action Saturday morning for day two of the tournament, taking on No. 2 USC at 7:00 a.m. HT, before playing  Arizona State at 11:00 a.m. HT
