FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.— The University of Hawai'i diving team will have two divers compete in the NCAA championships this year as senior
Johan Sandell, and sophomore
Ivy Houser turned in stellar performances on the third and final day of the Zone E Champions at the Aquatic Center of Northern Arizona University.
Sandell came into Wednesday's event needing to turn in a stellar performance or risk missing out on the NCAAs championship for the first time since he was a freshman during the 2015-16 campaign. He saved his best for last, placing at the No. 4 position of the platform dive with a final score of 655.90. After placing in the "B" cut yesterday of the three-meter dive, Sandell will go the NCAA to compete in both events.
On the women's side, Houser may have had a tougher path due to lack of experience compared to her counterpart of Sandell. However, Houser finished less than a point ahead of the 10th place position, finishing at No. 9 with a score of 466.30, for the last spot of the NCAAs in the platform event.
Narrowly missing the cut was teammate and senior, Monica Garavis at No. 11 with a score of 454. 50.
Houser will have a quick turnaround as she'll compete in the national championships next week in at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas beginning on Thursday, Mar. 21st. Sandell will compete the following week in Austin, Tex. as well. All championship dives will be live streamed on ESPN 3, with preliminary events being featured on texassports.com.
