Softball Falls in Eight Innings To Utah, 3-2

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (16-7, 0-0 Big West) fell in a heartbreaker to Utah, 3-2 in eight innings on Tuesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i starter Izzy Dino threw all eight innings in the loss as the Utes (11-13, 0-0 PAC-12) hit a two-run home run for the win.

Dino threw a career-high eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. She falls to 6-3 on the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, UH broke onto the scoreboard. Alyssa Sojka got the 'Bows' first hit with a single to right-centerfield. Sojka came all the around to score on a double drilled to the left-center gap by Cheeks Ramos.

Utah knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth on a fielding error at second which allowed Noskin from third.

The Utes then took a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth on two-run home run off the bat of Ally Dickman.

Hawai'i tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth. Alyssa Sojka looped a one-out opposite-field triple past the right fielder. Sojka scored on an RBI-groundout to the rightside of the infield by Ramos to trail by just one run. But that is how things ended as Utah got a Callee Heen to pop-out to second to end the rally and the game.

Utah used three pitchers in the win. Starter Chantelle Ladner threw into the first batter in the fifth inning. But after giving up a double by Sissy Pantastico, Sydney Sandez entered the game in the circle. Sandez lasted 1.1 innings while Jess Lynch got the final two outs in the sixth and gave up a walk to start the seventh. Ladner then re-entered the game and eventually earned the win. Overall she threw 6.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Sandez gave up a hit and a walk while Lynch did no allow a hit but gave up one walk.

Hawai'i will begin their final non-conference tournament on Wednesday. The Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic will feature No. 4 Alabama (25-0, 3-0 SEC), Niagara (0-7, 0-0 MAAC), and SIUE (7-7, 0-0 OVC).
