HONOLULU —The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team picked up its third win of the season with a 6-1 non-conference win over Pacific Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
UH earned the first point of the day with a comfortable sweep on all three courts during doubles. Singles play, however, proved extremely competitive on all six courts. UH ultimately won on five of six courts, but it didn't come easy with the five wins going the distance.
The Tigers evened the match, 1-1, after Akram El Sallaly got by
Asad Siyyid on the No. 4 court. Siyyid was edged out in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5) before dropping the second set 7-5. It was Pacific's only point of the day, but foreshadowed the tight matches the rest of the way.
UH won the next five points, though the Rainbow Warriors had to rally after finding themselves down a set in four of those flights.
Lucas Labrunie,
Blaz Seric,
Tristan Martins, and
Simão Telo Alves each out-lasted their Tiger foes to clinch the UH win. Hawai'i's No. 1
Andre Ilagan capped the day with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory. With the win Ilagan improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season in dual matches.
The Rainbow Warriors and Tigers will tangle with the Tigers again at the UH Tennis Complex Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
