Men's Tennis Falls To New Mexico State In UNLV Tourney Finale, 4-1

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to former Western Athletic Conference rival, New Mexico State, 4-1 on the final day of the UNLV Tournament. The Rainbow Warriors faces the Aggies at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Sunday morning in Las Vegas, Nev.

NMSU took the doubles point by winning the first two matches off the bat on Courts No. 1 and No. 2.

In singles, the Aggies quickly went up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win on the No. 6 court by  Nicolas Buitrago over Chia-Hua Lu. But UH's Blaz Seric then broke through in the win column, cruising to a straight-set win over Martin Simecek at No. 3.

NMSU followed by reeling off the next two wins at No. 4 and No. 2 to clinch the match over the 'Bows. At No. 4, NMSU's Mauri Benitez held off Hawai'i's Asad Siyyid by a break in both sets, 7-5, 6-4, while at No. 2, New Mexico State's Louis Menard defeated UH's Lucas Labrunie, 6-4, 6-3.

Hawai'i's No. 1 Andre Ilagan was trying to even his match against Stijn de Haan at a set apiece when the match was clinched by NMSU. Ilagan was edged out in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3) and was tied at 5-5 in Set 2 when the Aggies won. Tristan Martins was also in a hard fought battle against NMSU's Enrique Asmar on the No. 5 court. Asmar won the first set, 6-2, but Martins was a point away from forcing a third set in a second set tiebreaker at the time of completion, 6-6 (6-4).

The Rainbow Warriors return home to host a pair of matches against former Big West rivals Pacific. UH will take on the Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10. Both matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex at 12:00 p.m.
