UH Baseball Falls to Portland in Season Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team opened the 2019 season on Friday night, falling by a 10-4 final score in 10 innings to the visiting Portland Pilots at Les Murakami Stadium.

With the score knotted at 4-4 through nine innings, the Pilots reeled off six runs in the top of the 10th to earn the victory.

UH's Jeremy Wu-Yelland impressed in his second career start on the mound taking the no decision. The sophomore southpaw went 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts while giving up three runs on six hits. Colin Ashworth went two scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts for the Rainbow Warriors.

UH got the scoring going in the bottom of the third when Scotty Scott doubled and Maaki Yamazaki followed with an RBI double of his own for a 1-0 lead.

The 'Bows kept the lead until a four-run top of the sixth for the Pilots put the home side in a 4-1 hole. UH answered back in the bottom of the frame when Alex Baeza launched his first career home run over the fence in right field to cut the deficit down to 4-3.

In the following inning, Adam Fogel was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a Logan Pouelsen single up the middle. Fogel was able to score on a sky-high single from Ethan Lopez that landed in between Portland's left fielder, shortstop and third baseman to level the scoring at 4-4.

The score stayed tied at 4-4 until Portland's six-run 10th put the game out of reach.

Lopez led Hawaiʻi's efforts at the dish with a 3-for-4 performance. Making his collegiate debut, Scott also added a pair of hits for the 'Bows.

Freshman Calvin Turchin took the loss, yielding six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Portland finished with 17 hits to UH's nine. Connor Knutson picked up the victory in relief for the visitors.

The two teams will meet again at Les Murakami Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 16 for a doubleheader with the first game getting underway at 1:05 p.m.
