HONOLULU – The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team earned a split in Saturday's doubleheader versus Portland at Les Murakami Stadium. After falling 7-4 in the first game, the Rainbow Warriors bounced back with a 9-5 win in game two.
Game One – Portland 7 – Hawaiʻi 4
The Pilots (2-1) broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth and continued their offensive push with two runs in the seventh and nine innings to go with one more in the eighth.
Hawaiʻi (1-2) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run from junior
Adam Fogel to lead off the frame. Portland's Nate Packard kept the 'Bows off the scoreboard over the next four innings to pick up the win.
When Packard gave way to Morgan White, the Rainbow Warriors responded with three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Fogel knocked his second solo shot of the game, while
Jacob Sniffin and
Alex Baeza tacked on RBIs in the inning for the 'Bows. The rally fell short, however, as White was able to work out of the jam.
Despite giving up just two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings, freshman
Aaron Davenport took the loss in the first outing of his UH career.
Logan Pouelsen followed by going 1.1 innings with two earned runs on two hits with
Scott Bellina wrapping up the final 2.1 innings with three runs on two hits.
Game Two – Hawaiʻi 9 – Portland 5
UH earned the split in game two in come-from-behind fashion. Trailing 5-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Rainbow Warriors exploded for seven runs to gain the upper hand.
With two runners on,
Alex Baeza smacked his second home run of the young season to right center to level the scoring at 5-5. Later in the frame,
Adam Fogel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded followed by
Ethan Lopez reaching on an error and
Dallas Duarte singling up the middle to plate final four runs of the game.
Freshman
Cade Halemanu earned the win after pitching 1.1 innings of shutout ball in his collegiate debut out of the bullpen. Senior
Dominic DeMiero started and went 3.2 inning before sophomore
Cade Smith delivered a strong 4.0 inning-outing with seven strikeouts.
Freshman
Dallas Duarte was the spark plug for UH in game two, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Hawaiʻi and Portland will cap their opening series with a 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Les Murakami Stadium.
