NCAA First and Second Rounds in Honolulu
The subregional that UH hosted was the first for the Rainbow Wahine since 2013. This year, UH hosted Northern Colorado, No. 20 San Diego and No. 23 Washington State. It was the only sub-regional with three Top 25 ranked teams and three conference champions. UH was ranked at No. 18 going into the start of the tourney. All four teams were also ranked in the Top 75 in the RPI with UH coming in at 11, USD at No. 26, WSU at No. 49, and UNC at 74. Northern Colorado came in as the Big Sky champions, San Diego the WCC champs and UH won the Big West. It also was one of just two subregionals with all female head coaches leading their teams into the postseason. This year three Big West teams earned a bid to the NCAA tournament. UH got the automatic bid, but Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara also got to the big Dance and all three teams won their first round match. Hawai'i remains the lone BWC team alive in the tournament.
NCAA History
Hawai'i has a total of 81 total NCAA tournament wins which ranks UH fourth in wins in tournament history. Seventy-nine of those wins came during former head coach Dave Shoji's tenure. Hawai'i is one of just 10 teams out of the 332 NCAA DI teams to have won an NCAA Championship in 1982, 83 and 1987. UH has advanced to the National finals five times and the Final Four eight different times, the last coming in 2009. This is the 27th-straight appearance for Hawai'i in the tourney and the team's 38th overall appearance. The only year UH ever missed postseason play was in 1992.
NCAA Tournament Under Ah Mow
In Ah Mow's first two seasons as head coach, Hawai'i finished second in the Big West, earning a pair of at-large bids into the NCAA tournament. In 2017, Hawai'i battled hard, but fell in five sets to Illinois in the Seattle subregional. Last year, 2018, UH once again fell in five sets coming up just short against Baylor. This year, the Rainbow Wahine finally broke through to capture Ah Mow's first two NCAA tournament wins. Ah Mow and associate head coach
Angelica Ljungqvist both were standouts at UH and as players recorded a 9-4 NCAA tournament record, advancing to the tournament's Championship match in 1996--the last time UH was in the championship match. UH fell to Stanford that season for the title.
