HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii men's basketball team gave a rousing effort in handing San Francisco its first loss of the season, 85-75, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 5-2 with their fourth straight home victory.
Drew Buggs scored a career-high 25 points to lead a UH offense that shot 50 percent and set a season-high in points. The Rainbow Warriors also got it done defensively. The Don (7-1) entered the game undefeated on the strength of red-hot three-point shooting and an offense that ranked third in the nation at nearly 90 points per game. USF, however, was held nearly 15 points under their average and shot just 7-of-21 from long-range.
Powered by the backcourt of Buggs and
Eddie Stansberry, UH had a strong first half. After spotting the Dons the first four points of the game, the 'Bows went on an 11-2 and built their lead to as many as 10. UH took a 39-30 lead into the locker room with Buggs and Stansberry combining for 23 points.
The Dons roared back and took a four-point lead midway through the second half. The turning point came at the 8-minute mark when UH went on a game-changing surge. With the game tied 58-58, UH got back-to-back jumpers from Stansberry and Buggs to ignite a 14-1 run that put UH up for good.
UH sealed the game at the line where they finished 20-of-24 for the game. Stansberry finished with 21 points, the fifth time in the last six games he has hit the 20-point plateau.
Samuta Avea added 13 points, while
Zigmars Raimo had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Buggs added a team-high six assists while shooting 11-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-6 on three-pointers.
The Rainbow Warriors next host Hawaii Pacific on Sunday, Dec. 1. Tipoff is at 5:00 p.m. and will follow the Rainbow Wahine game versus Texas at 2:30 p.m.
