Men’s Volleyball Announces 2020 Schedule

(Updated Monday, Nov. 18)

HONOLULU – Ten nationally ranked teams, including three final four teams, highlight the 2020 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball schedule.

The Rainbow Warriors will play a 29-match schedule – 17 against teams ranked in the final AVCA poll – that includes two-time defending NCAA champion Long Beach State (April 3-4). Ten of those matches are against teams that finished in the Top 10 including national semifinalists Pepperdine and Lewis.

UH will also host a pair of in-season tournaments, the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic and the 26thOutrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational. UH, which finished last season as national runner-up, will host 18 matches at the Stan Sheriff Center beginning with a first-ever meeting against Charleston, Jan. 3 & 4.

In addition, Hawai'i will host an exhibition series against Nittaidai University of Japan (Feb. 26 & 28). The series was made possible in partnership with the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

The Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic (Jan. 9-11) will feature Emmanuel of Conference Carolinas, Harvard of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and Grand Canyon of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The 26th annual Outrigger Resorts & Hotels Invitational (Feb. 6-8) includes Queens, Concordia, and UC Irvine. UH's match against UCI on Feb. 8 will not count toward the Big West Conference standings.

In between both tournaments, the Warriors will travel nearly 10,000 miles round trip to play four non-conference matches beginning with Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association members Lewis (Jan. 17) and Loyola (Jan. 18). The UH-Lewis contest is a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament semifinals, which the Warriors won in four to advance to the championship match. After a travel day to the state of Tennessee, Hawai'i will play both Lincoln Memorial (Jan. 20) and King (Jan. 21).

Following the Outrigger, UH will travel back to the continent for a pair of matches against former MPSF rival Stanford (Feb. 14-15) before returning to the Stan Sheriff Center to host Nittaidai. UH and Nittaidai last met in a two-match exhibition series in 2012.

UH will then host another former MPSF rival BYU for a pair of matches (March 5-6) prior to beginning the Big West portion of their schedule at CSUN (March 13-14). Before returning home, the Warriors will play a single-match at Pepperdine, which finished last season ranked No. 3 and captured its fifth MPSF championship.

Hawai'i will wrap up the regular season by hosting six of eight, including Big West series with UC San Diego (March 27-28), Long Beach State (April 3-4), and UC Irvine (April 17-18). The last time UH and LBSU met in the Stan Sheriff Center was in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,300 for the Big West Tournament championship, which the Warriors won in five sets.

UH will travel to UC Santa Barbara for a two-match Big West series (April 10-11).

The Big West Tournament will be held April 23-25 in Irvine, Calif., while the NCAA Championship is scheduled for May 5, 7, 9 in Fairfax, Va.
