Eddie Stansberry scored a career-high 28 points and the University of Hawai]i men's basketball team put the defensive clamps down in the second half for an 83-75 win over Portland State Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
With the win the Rainbow Warriors moved to 3-1, its third straight season with such a start. UH got the job done on both ends of the court. The 'Bows shot a season-best 51 percent from the floor, including 55 percent (11-of-20) on three-pointers. Meanwhile, the Rainbow Warriors held the Vikings to just 32 percent shooting in the second half to secure the win.
Stansberry continued to scorch the nets for the 'Bows. He buried his first six three-pointers en route to his third straight 20-point game.
Zigmars Raimo also stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists.
Drew Buggs had 13 points and five assists, while
Samuta Avea added 12 points.
UH held the lead for the majority of the first half, going up by as many as nine points on three different occasions. The Vikings scored nine unanswered before Buggs' jumper in the waning seconds gave UH a 40-38 lead going into the locker room. Stansberry led UH with 14 points in the first half.
After Portland State (1-2) tied the game, 40-40, UH took the lead for good on a back-to-back three-pointers by Stansberry and Buggs. UH led by as many as 10 points and the Vikings would get no closer than five points in the final 10 minutes. UH, which committed 12 first-half turnovers against PSU's pressing defense, turned the ball over just six times after the break.
Matt Hauser led the Vikings with 18 points. PSU's leading scorer Holland Woods came into the game averaging 19.5 points per game, but UH held him to just 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting. The Vikings finished the game shooting just 39 percent as a team, including 29 percent on three-pointers.
The Rainbow Warriors next head to the road for the first time this year, when they travel to the Midwest for a nationally-televised game vs. Illinois on Monday, Nov. 18. Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. CT/3:00 p.m. HT.
