UC Irvine Holds Off No. 11 Hawai‘i, 3-2

HONOLULU—The No. 11 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (12-2, 2-1 Big West) was upset in five sets by UC Irvine (4-12, 1-3 Big West) on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Anteaters recorded their first win over Hawai'i in a reverse sweep, 25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 16-25, 13-15. Freshman outside hitter Hanna Hellvig led UH with 14 kills while Norene Iosia notched another double-double and had a career-high with six service aces in the loss.

Hellvig recorded double-digit kills for the 11th time this season and for the seventh-straight match. She hit .229 for the night with six errors in 35 attacks. She also added five assists, four digs, two blocks and a service ace.

For Iosia, it was the seventh double-double for the senior setter this season. She posted 24 assists and 10 digs. Her six service aces ties her with 12 other Rainbow Wahine for No. 3 in the UH record book for single-game service aces. She also vaulted up the career-record books etching her name at No. 9 passing Reydan "Tita" Ahuna's 108 and McKenna Granato's 111. Iosia now has 113 career service aces. She needs just four more to tie Nikki Taylor for No. 8 with 117 aces.

UH won the first set 25-19. The 'Bows trailed early on, 3-4, but a six-point run with Hellvig serving gave the 'Bows a 9-4 lead. Later a 10-to-0 scoring run with Iosia behind the service line extended UH's lead to 24-9. Iosia served up four aces during the 10-point run.

The second set featured scoring runs by both sides.  UH started the set where they left off the first, on a six-point surge with Iosia serving. But the Anteaters battled back to score eight-straight points to take a 13-8 lead. UH quickly recovered by going on an 8-to-1 run to re-take the lead at 16-14. UH would hold on to the lead and take Set 2, 25-21.

Set 3 was tight throughout with 10 ties and six lead changes. The Anteaters scored four of the last five points of the frame to hold off Hawai'i, 25-23. Although the fourth set had four tied scores, UCI hit the gas and never looked back. The Anteaters never trailed in the set and cruised to a 25-16 win to knot the match at 2-2.

In the race to 15 in Set 5, the Anteaters jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Hawai'i however would fight their way back to tie it at 12-12. But a pair of hitting errors gave UCI match point, and they closed it out with a kill to win the fifth, 15-13.

UC Irvine had three players hit double-figures in kills, led by Abby Marjama's 14. Onye Ofoegbu had a match high six blocks and Kelly Negraon posted a match-high 15 digs.
