Game Notes

•Hawai'i won it's two matches last week, sweeping UC Riverside on Friday and rallying from two sets down to reverse sweep UC Davis in five on Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in conference. On Sunday, UH celebrated the Stan Sheriff Center's 25th Anniversary.

•Feed the Swede - When junior outside hitter Jolie Rasmussen went down in Week 3 vs. West Virginia, it was the rookie from Lidongo, Stockholm, Sweden who stepped up to shoulder the load. Outside hitter Hanna Hellvig just earned her third Big West Freshman of the Week award after leading UH with 26 total kills against UC Riverside and UC Davis. Hellvig averaged 3.25 kills, 1.63 digs and 0.50 blocks per set. She recorded a team-high 16 kills in Sunday's comeback win over the Aggies in which she also contributed three blocks (one solo) and five digs. Hellvig produced 10 kills, eight digs and one block against the Highlanders. Overall, she leads UH with 234 kills (almost 100 more than her closest teammate, fellow freshman Amber Igede who has 135 kills). Hellvig has led UH in kills in eight of the last 11 matches. She has posted double-figure kills in 15 matches this season--including . Overall, Hellvig leads UH with 234 kills while averaging 3.08 kill per set. She is one of just three Rainbow Wahine to play all 76 sets this season (Bailey Choy and Norene Iosia are the other two). Hellvig is also second on the team with 161 digs and third on the team in blocks (58) and service aces (13). Hellvig also has five double-doubles this season.

•Iosia embracing leadership role - The undeniable leader of the Rainbow Wahine has been senior setter/outside hitter Norene Iosia. When UH fell to UC Irvine three weeks ago, on the following night, UH found themselves struggling and down 0-2 to Cal State Fullerton. But Iosia put the team on her back, as the coaches reverted to their 6-2 offense from last year to start Set 3 with Iosia serving as the outside hitter when she rotated into the front row. She had not taken any swings or any blocking reps during the first five weeks of the season...but against the Titans and their backs against the wall, Iosia was called into action and she came to the rescue. She refused to let UH lose and finished the match just one kill shy of recording her sixth career triple-double with 26 assists, 17 digs, nine kills, two service aces and a block. Iosia just had her streak of seven straight double-doubles snapped vs. UC Davis in UH's most recent match, but she finished that match just short of a triple double as well with 23 assists, 9 digs and 9 kills. She is one of three players to play all 76 sets this season (Bailey Choy and Hanna Hellvig).

•Iosia rising in career record books - In her senior season Iosia is doing everything she can to help the Rainbow Wahine. She leads UH with 401 assists, 27 service aces and 204 digs. She also has recorded 27 kills and five blocks. For her career, Iosia moved passed former UH great Nikki Taylor into No. 8 on UH's career service ace list with 118. She also passed Jessica Sudduth and Mahina Elenecki to move into No. 13 on the UH career dig list with 1,048 digs and she is No. 9 in career assists with 2,905.

•Newcomers Making Huge Impact - Coming into the season, one of the biggest questions was how the nine newcomers (including five freshmen) would gel with the seven returnees. The resounding answer has been, 'very well!' The nine newcomers account for 754 of UH's 1014 kills (74%), 701 of 1,097 digs (64%), and 155.5 of UH's 194.5 total blocks (80%). The freshmen alone account for 532 kills (53%), 344 digs (31%), and a whopping 120 total blocks (62%).

•Van Sickle Returns To Spark Win Over UC Davis - Sunday's win was sparked by the entrance of Brooke Van Sickle who came into the match when UH was down two sets. She had missed the previous four matches due to an injury suffered in the third set of the UC Irvine loss three weeks ago. Van Sickle provided the lift and stability on the court for  the 'Bows needed in the come-from-behind win. In her three sets played on Sunday, Van Sickle was key, posting seven kills, eight digs, two service aces and a block. Overall, the redshirt junior transfer from Oregon is third on the team with 122 kills. She is hitting at a .231 clip. She fourth on the team with 130 digs and she has been in on 31 total blocks. The Battle Ground, Wash. native was born in Hilo, Hawai'i. She played two full seasons on the women's indoor volleyball team and one for the beach vb team at Oregon. Van Sickle appeared in 67 career matches spanning three seasons with 30 starts with 237 sets played. She tallied 203 kills, 42 service aces and 468 digs.

•UH Revert To Last Year's 6-2 Offense - After starting the season with a 6-2, libero-less offense which allowed for three hitters in the front row and two coming from the back row at all times and the setters subbing in for the middles, but the injuries to both Rasmussen and Van Sickle forced the coaches to make a change. What has transpired since has been the re-installation of last year's 6-2 offense with Iosia playing all six rotations--as the setter in the back row and pin-hitter when in the front row. Bailey Choy comes into the game for one of the outside hitters when in the back row.

•Manoa Roofing Company - After starting the year out-blocking their first 10 opponents, the 'Bows have been out-blocked in five of the last nine matches. BUT, the 'Bows are still out-blocking their opponents this season 194.5-to-142. It is the most blocks for UH since the 2015 season when UH led the NCAA for much of that year in blocks. Through 19 games, UH currently has 194.5 total blocks, compared to 234.5 at the same point in 2015. UH has recorded double-digits in blocks 14 times this season and have out-blocked their opponents a total of 14 times this season.

•Celebrating the Stan Sheriff Center, UH Fans No Ka Oi - The Rainbow Wahine volleyball team officially opened the arena on October 20, 1994 in a four-set victory over San Jose State. Current head coach Robyn Ah Mow and associate head coach Angelica Ljungqvist were both sophomores on the team that played that opening match in what was then 'i called the Special Events Arena. On Sunday night, the University of Hawai'i athletics department celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Stan Sheriff Center. Fan support remains a constant for the Rainbow Wahine. Hawai'i has never been outside the top three in national attendance and ranks second this season only to Nebraska. UH swept UCLA at the Stan Sheriff Center before 8,657 people, the largest crowd to watch any volleyball game this year in the NCAA. (The Stanford-Nebraska rematch is second with 8,632.) It was UH's biggest crown since the 2013 Senior Night against CSUN on Nov. 23, 2013. Hawai'i has averaged a home attendance of 6,233 with a 81,034 total through 13 home matches this year.

•Senior outside hitter McKenna Ross was one of the keys in UH's win at UC Santa Barbara. After hitting -.214 with two kills against Cal Poly, Ross a night later was on fire against the Gauchos. At UCSB, she logged her third double-digit kill match of the season while hitting .400 for the match. She recorded 12 kills with just three errors in 30 attacks. Ross also had two blocks and six digs in the Thunderdome. After missing the first six games of the season due to a medical issue, Ross has posted 99 kills, 68 digs, 13 blocks, five assists and a service ace over the last 13 matches.

•Sky's the limit - Junior middle blocker Skyler Williams enters Week 9 leading the Big West in hitting percentage, with 125 kills and just 31 errors in 230 attacks for a .409%. Williams is also ranked at No. 23 in the NCAA in hitting percentage. She is sixth in the league averaging 1.00 blocks per set. Overall, Williams' 125 kills is third on the team. She is second on the team with 64 total blocks. Earlier this year, Williams helped lead UH to three wins to capture the 2019 Heineken Rainbow Wahine Invitational title in Week 2 and for her efforts, earned her first career tournament Most Valuable Player Award and her first Big West Defensive Player of the Week Award (Sept. 9). She led UH with 12 blocks while pounding 32 kills and tallying a .481 hitting percentage against Army, Sacramento State, and Denver.

•The Bayou blocker & basher - Freshman middle blocker Amber Igiede has definitely made an impact as a rookie. She second in the Big West in both hitting percentage (.377) and blocks (1.23 blocks per set). Overall, she leads UH with 81 total blocks (10 solo) and is second on the team with 135 total kills. The Baton Rouge native is just the second player to come play for UH in women's volleyball from the state of Louisiana. The first was former UH great, Kim Willoughby who was from Napoleonville, La.

•Choy ssetting success - Senior transfer, setter Bailey Choy and Norene Iosia have combined their efforts to issue out 786 assists. Choy has dished out 385 assists and is third on the team with 204 digs and is second with 14 service aces. Choy has recorded six double-doubles--the last coming against Cal State Fullerton with 28 assists and 16 digs. Choy played her first three seasons at Utah. She graduated early and transferred home to play her final season as a Rainbow Wahine. Currently, Choy is pursuing her Master's degree in accounting. She started three seasons for the Utes, started 99 matches while issuing 3,254 career assists with 860 digs, 47 total blocks and 88 service aces. As a junior, played all 128 sets for the Utes (the most by any player) and led Utah with 1,096 assists (8.56 per set) and posted a team-high 48 service aces and 17 double-doubles to go with 325 digs and 14 total blocks
