HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team has a busy week ahead as they first host Washington in a dual match on Thursday, Jan. 17, followed by the two-day Weinman Foundation Invite, which runs from Friday, Jan. 18-Saturday, Jan. 19. All matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex. The Weinman Foundation Invite will feature No. 12 Ole Miss and Washington.
The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a 2-0 week after narrowly defeating both Baylor and CSUN in their first dual matches of the year. Junior
Alzbeta Houbova helped to lead the 'Bows to victory. She was the only UH player to win both of her singles and doubles matches over the weekend. Houbova and her doubles partner
Michelle Pits were able to secure the doubles point on both days. Against Baylor, the UH duo edged out the Bears' Kris Sorokolet and Katelyn Parker in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (4). Then, against the Matadors on the following day, Houbova and Pits defeated Emma Roenholt and Sibel Demirbaga, 6-3.
On Saturday, UH's
Nikola Dolakova came through, clinching the match with a three set win on the No. 3 court holding off Baylor's Angie Shakhraichuck, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Then, on Sunday, Hawai'i's
Maayan Sela came through in the clutch, bouncing back after dropping the first set then edging out CSUN's Joelene Coetzee as both players battled through cramps for a dramatic three set win, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
