HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (1-0) upset Baylor (0-1) in their dual match home opener on Saturday afternoon. Hawai'i held off the Bears, who are just outside the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 25 rankings, 4-3 at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
The Rainbow Wahine opened the match by edging out Baylor to secure the doubles point. After falling in the first match, UH's No. 2 duo of Maayan Sela and Nikola Dolakova defeated Jessica Hinojosa and Dominika Sujova, 6-3 to even things up. UH's Michelle Pits and Alzbeta Houbova then captured the doubles point with a 7-6 (4) tie-breaker win on the No. 3 court over BU's Kris Sorokolet and Katelyn Parker.
 
In singles, Hawai'i's Roxanne Resma unfortunately retired due to injury, which tied the match at 1-1. But the 'Bows then took a 3-1 lead with both Houbova and Pits winning their respective matches in straight sets. No. 6 Houbova knocked off Stephanie Adames, 6-4, 6-2 while Pits held off Sujova, 6-3, 7-5. Baylor then tied the match at 3-3 winning the next two matches on the No. 2 and No. 1 courts.
 
With the match tied at 3-3, everything hinged on the final match on the No. 3 court between UH's Dolakova and BU's Angie Shakhraichuk. Shakhraichuk took the first set, but Dolakova battle back to dominate the second set to force a deciding third set. In the third, Dolakova jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Shakhraichuk came roaring back, winning four-straight games to tie the third at 5-5. Dolokova then regrouped to take the final two games to seal the win and the match, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
 
Hawai'i will play its first Big West dual match of the season on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
